MEANING AND SIGNIFICANCE OF AUGUST 30

Victory Day is a national holiday celebrated every year on August 30 in the Republic of Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to commemorate the great offensive that resulted in victory under the commander-in-chief of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in Dumlupinar on August 30, 1922.

After the successful conclusion of the Great Offensive, also known as the Battle of the square of the commander-in-chief because it was held under the commander-in-chief of Ataturk, the Greek armies were followed to Izmir; Turkish territory was liberated from the Greek occupation with the liberation of Izmir on September 9, 1922. Although the invasion troops leave the country’s borders later, August 30 symbolically represents the day when the country’s territory is recaptured. 30 August day, which was first celebrated in 1924 in Afyon under the name of victory from the commander-in-chief, is celebrated as Victory Day in Turkey since 1926.
