ABOUT BLEPHAROPLASTY / EYELID SURGERY IN TURKEY
For the blepharoplasty upper eyelid surgery in Turkey hospitals is the overhanging of the upper skin in marked, and then followed by the process of the skin above incision to be gently pinched while eyes closed to determine the max amount of available skin to be removed. The skin of the upper eyelid is safely removed using a fine scalpel blade, scissors and forceps. If orbital fat is seen bulging then the orbital septum will be opened so the fat will be removed or shaped. Finally, the skin will be closed by a combination of interrupted and continuous non-dissolving fine stitches because they avoid scarring and stitch lines forming. Non-dissolving stitches fall out so they don’t need removal. There can be scarring like in every surgery but scarring in eye lid surgery is minimized due to placement of the incisions as they are placed in skin folds and sometimes behind the eye lid. Any scars that are noticed will fade away in time to the surrounding skin.

BEFORE BLEPHAROPLASTY
- Patients must be healthy with a good diet
.
- Patients must inform surgeon and stop any medication or herbal supplements
.
- Completely quit smoking at least 2 weeks before surgery
.
- Patients must arrange for someone to be with them before and after the surgery as the eye may be covered or may have blurred vision.

AFTER BLEPHAROPLASTY
- Eye lids may be supported with paper tape to ensure it heals up correctly
.
- Gauze may be worn for up to 3 days after the surgery
.
- Use eye drops or ointments as directed by the surgeon
.
- In case of pain use pain medication prescribed by the surgeon
.
- Cold compress or ice can be applied to reduce any pain and swelling that occurs
.
- To help swelling use cold compress and ice especially during the first 48hrs after surgery
.
- Do not wear contact lenses at least 2 weeks after the surgery
.
- Patients must avoid alcohol o Keep hydrated so drink plenty of water
.
- Keep a healthy diet o Resting will be good so get some rest o Glasses can be worn after the surgery
.
- To shorten recovery time avoid watching television, computer and reading
.
- Exercise should be avoided as well as bending and lifting and activities which can cause blood to flow to the eyes
.
- Sun exposure should be avoided for at least 6 months.

- Sunglasses can be worn to avoid direct sunlight and wind.

RISKS OF BLEPHAROPLASTY
With all kinds of surgery there is a slight possibility of risks which patients should be aware of:
- Reaction to anesthesia

- Dry, irritated eyes

- Scarring

- Temporary vision changes

- Double vision

- Injury to eye muscles

- Small risk of blindness

DEFINITION OF BLEPHAROPLASTY
- General anesthesia – variety of medications given to ensure unconsciousness, loss of control of reflexes. The patient is put to sleep to not feel any pain or discomfort.

- Self dissolving stitches – stitches, which are eventually absorbed by the body so there is no need for the removal of sutures.

- Incision – surgical cut made in the skin during surgery or treatment.

FIRST DAY
The patients will attend a consultation with the surgeon and will be advised about the procedure and their condition. The patient will then be taken through a couple of tests that are required before the surgery. If desired, patients can spend the day to rest and attend the hospital the next day.

SECOND DAY
Blepharoplasty surgery will be performed. The surgery will be performed using general anesthesia. The surgery will take around between 1-3 hours to perform on an outpatient basis. Once the surgery is over the patient will be taken to a private room where they will be staying in hospital for resting. The surgeon will perform a check up and if they are approved to be in a good, healthy condition and the surgery results are all successful; the patients are advised with post treatment care requirements and are ready to be discharged from hospital to their settlements.

THIRD DAY
Patients will attend a post surgery appointment for a final check up and consultation. The patient will be advised on further medication. There is no need for the removal of stitches because a combination of interrupted and continuous non-dissolving fine stitches is applied and they will eventually fall out. If everything is right then the patient is ready to return to their destination. Depending on the type of technique and surgery performed patients may need to attend post surgery on the 5th and 7th day after.

1. What is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure done on the upper or lower eyelid in which excess muscle, skin and fat is removed. This can be performed to prevent wrinkles, baggy or droopy eyelids and bags under eyes, excess skin of the upper / lower high eyelids.

2. How long does Blepharoplasty last?
Blepharoplasty lasts from 1-3 hours. The surgery is done usually on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia. How is Blepharoplasty done? 4. Will I have scars on eyelid?
Patients usually do not have visible scars. Scars are usually hidden in the folds of the eyelids to minimize scarring. The scars are placed in the normal creases and folds of the upper and lower eyelids so when the eye is open the scars are invisible. If complications occur after the surgery then as a result to this scarring can occur.

5. When do stitches get removed?
The skin will be stitched using a combination of interrupted and continuous non-dissolving fine stitches so they will fall out and do not need removal.

6. How long do I need to stay in Turkish JCI accredited hospital?
The surgery is done on an outpatient unless there are other surgeries performed with blepharoplasty which require for the patient to stay in hospital. How long do I need to stay in Turkey? The recommended stay in Turkey for Blepharoplasty is 3-7 days including consultation before the surgery and after the surgery.

There are no special technical devices used in Blepharoplasty surgery apart from fine scalpel blade, scissors and forceps.
