THE FEAST OF THE HISTORY OF MEDICINE

In the 1950s-1960s, it became a tradition to issue a journal by the Student Associations of medical schools on March 14. In these journals, the problems of students and physicians were brought to the fore. The cover of this 1960 magazine also caricatured a medical student struggling with faculty lessons.

On March 14, 1827, the Second World War began. During the reign of Mahmut, at the suggestion of Hekimbashi Mustafa Behçet, the establishment of the first surgeon’s office in the Tulumbacibashi mansion in Shehzadebashi under the name of Tephane-i Amire and surgeon-I amire is considered to be the day when modern medical education began in Turkey. 14 March, the day of the founding of the school, is celebrated as the “day of Medicine”.

The first celebration took place in occupied Istanbul on March 14, 1919. On that day, medical 3. under the leadership of class student Hikmet Boran, medical school students gathered to protest the occupation and supported them by the famous doctors of the era. Thus, the day of Medicine began as a domestic defense movement of members of the medical profession.

Between 1929-1937, 12 May Day was celebrated as a medical Day. Since this date was considered the date when the first Turkish medical classes began in Yildirim Darüşşifa in Bursa, the medical Day was held. But in time, this practice was abandoned and it became a medical Day on March 14 again.

Since 1976, there has been a celebration not only on March 14, but also during the week that includes March 14, and this week is considered Medicine Week.

Similar celebrations around the world are held on different dates. March 30 July 1842, the anniversary of the first use of general anesthesia in operations in the United States, for example; July 1, the anniversary of the birth (and also death) of the famous doctor Bidhan Chandra Roy in India, is celebrated as “Doctors ‘ Day”.
