WHAT IS OPHTHALMOLOGY?

Ophthalmology is a medical science that deals with diseases and surgery of the visual pathways. The origin of the word comes from the Greek ophthalmos (eye) and logos (word). It also includes animal eyes as a discipline because there is extremely little difference between them and the human. These differences, on the other hand, depend only on the prevalence and anatomy, and not on diseases. An ophthalmologist is a title given only to specialists who have received their medical qualifications, and they are classified as surgeons because they can perform eye operations.

Turkey Medicals member and JCI international hospital Eye Clinic department and Ophthalmology Specialized Turkish eye doctor, answered the questions about smart lenses…

.
WHO CAN BE OFFERED A SMART LENS?

Putting an artificial lens in the eye with an operation in Antalya Turkey that will be performed in patients whose vision is impaired due to cataracts, is a natural part of the operation and mandatory. If the patient is going to have cataract lens surgery in Turkey, this lens that will be placed in the eye can be placed in accordance with the patient’s request, a lens called an intelligent lens to save the patient from glasses at all distances. The most suitable patient group of the smart lens is the group of patients who have cataracts and need surgery.

Another ideal group of patients is patients who wear glasses separately near and far and do not have cataracts. For this reason, having to carry two different glasses is a difficult situation for patients. Such patients are ideal patients for a smart lens or lens. Patients who do not wear glasses far away, but who do not want to wear glasses soon, again fall into the group of patients without cataracts, where we can recommend a smart lens. In addition, patients whose glasses number is too high to be corrected with a laser, regardless of how old they are, are also another group of patients who may be offered smart lens surgery if their condition is appropriate.

.
WHO IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR SMART LENS SURGERY?

In order to get the most out of smart lens surgery, there should be no diseases in the cornea and retinal layers. For example, if our patient has diabetes and has sugar-related hemorrhages on his retina, this patient is not a suitable candidate for smart lens surgery. Again, if there is a condition where there is a trace of an old injury on the cornea that disrupts vision, if the eye pressure is high, again, smart lens surgery may not be a good option. In addition, a smart lens is not a suitable option for young people under the age of 40 whose eye structure is suitable for laser surgery.

.
HOW IS SMART LENS SURGERY PERFORMED?

Smart lens surgery is no different from a classic cataract surgery. The suture is not used and is not an operation with bleeding. The operation is performed by numbing the eye with drops. There is no pain at the time of or after the operation. The eye does not need to be closed after surgery. A plastic transparent protector can be temporarily installed, usually for a few hours of protection.

.
CAN SMART LENS SURGERY BE DONE WITH A LASER?

An important development in recent years in smart lens and cataract surgery is the use of a laser. We use the laser, which has come into new use that was not used before, at the stages of cutting the transparent frontmost layer of the eye, which we call the cornea, cutting and opening the natural front membrane of the lens of the eye, and breaking the cataract into pieces, easy swallowing. The use of lasers in these three important stages makes the surgery more reliable, safe, and also shortens the operation time. In addition, if the patient has astigmatism, correction of astigmatism with a smart lens is also possible with a laser.

.
IS THE TURKISH EYE PHYSICIAN EXPERIENCE IMPORTANT IN SMART LENS SURGERY?

As with any profession, experience is extremely important in smart lens surgery in Turkey. The correct interpretation of preoperative examinations is also directly related to professional experience. For a happy patient, a good evaluation before surgery, surgical experience and ability in surgery are the key to successful follow-up for success after eye surgery in Turkey.
