WHAT IS CATARACT SURGERY?

What is cataract surgery in Turkey and how is it performed? How many minutes does it take on average? We’ve compiled all the details and what you’re interested in about cataract surgery by Turkey Medicals.

Cataract surgery is the most performed operation in the world and in our country with approximately 700,000 operations every year. It is a fast and low-risk operation that restores vision by placing an artificial implant in the eye.

Cataract surgery in Antalya and Istanbul is surgery to remove the lens from the affected eye and in most cases replace it with an artificial lens.

The only treatment currently possible is surgery, and it has benefited from significant technical advances over the past three decades. It consists of emulsifying and then emptying the contents of the lens to replace a synthetic artificial lens from a small incision of 1.5 to 2.75 millimeters, depending on the techniques performed on the cornea.

HOW IS CATARACT PERFORMED?

In cataract surgery, local anesthesia is often sufficient, that is, an eye drop is used, which drops a few drops into the eye just before the operation and completely numb the eye. Usually the patient enters on the same day as cataract surgery. After several hours in outpatient mode, he will be discharged the same day with a shell and bandage over the operated eye.

This shell will be held for several days (or just one night depending on the situation) and removed only a few times during the day to put the necessary eye drops in, especially after surgery.

Sometimes for reasons of personal comfort (single person or family and friends who are worried about returning home from the first day) a very short hospitalization is recommended in the hospital.

A corneal micro-incision of 1.8 to 2.2 mm is made in the cornea to provide access to the lens. A second 1.0 mm cut, called a counter cut, is made to allow the use of a manipulator tool. A visco-elastic gel is injected into the anterior chamber of the eye to protect the inner face of the cornea during surgery, to protect the intraocular cavities during intervention, and especially to ensure the expansion of the eye.

After the implant in Turkey eye hospital is inserted, the viscoelastic is aspirated and the surgeon checks the firmness of the eye.
.

HOW MANY MINUTES DOES IT TAKE ON AVERAGE??

Cataract surgery takes about 30 minutes depending on the patient’s condition. Normally the lens (eye lens) is clear and transparent. Thus, this lens allows light to pass through the retina, which acts as a screen and allows vision. When cataracts develop, the lens becomes opaque, which affects vision. It is a common disease that affects more than one in five people from age 65 and almost two in three after age 85.

If the disease is too advanced and complicates daily life and normal activities, the doctor may recommend surgery. Turkish eye doctor Cataract surgery is the only way to properly restore vision once the disease has begun.

.
WHAT IS DONE AFTER SURGERY IN TURKEY IS PERFORMED?

An hour or two after surgery, the patient usually returns home accompanied by someone he loves. The protective shell provided in an operating room should be worn for the first 4 nights to prevent untimely rubbing of the eye. Simple sunglasses (optional) are enough during the day. No dressing required.

The patient drops anti-inflammatory and antibiotic eye drops (white cap), which are prescribed 3 times a day for 4 weeks. For the first 4 nights, the patient drops a drop to dilate the pupil before sleep.

A post-operative check-up is mandatory by the surgeon or one of his assistants in the morning after the operation and 5 to 7 days after the operation.

.
HOW LONG IS THE RECOVERY TIME OF THE EYE PATIENT?

Usually cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure. So the patient can go home during the day.

However, it is preferable to have a companion present because the operated eye will be closed with a bandage, and this can affect overall vision depending on the condition of the other eye. In most cases, the operation provides an excellent vision improvement within the day or a few days after the operation. The patient can then resume normal daily life.
