SMART LENS” WARNING TO EYE PATIENTS

Turkey Medicals member Ophthalmologist Professor Doctor explained the disadvantages of marketing lenses called ”smart lenses” that are inserted into the eye with a surgical operation, such as an ordinary cosmetic product, and warned patients.

Faculty Member of the Department of Ophthalmology Prof. Doctor, “The ‘multi-focal intraocular lens’, introduced as an intelligent lens, is an up-to-date model of artificial lenses that we have placed in the eye in cataract surgeries since the 1970s. The difference between multi-focus lenses and standard (single-focus) lenses is the to provide vision without glasses not only at a distance, but also at close and intermediate distances. However, the quality of vision The multi-focal lens design, which has been able to capture the quality of vision provided by standard lenses or successfully imitate our natural lens, has not yet been achieved. Some medical institutions and physicians may look at multi-focus lenses as a product to be marketed and endanger the eye health of the community,” he said.

.
PHYSICIANS SHOULD EVALUATE THE PATIENT AND PATIENT’S TREATMENT OPTION CORRECTLY

“Multifocal lenses and detailed assessment of the patient after the patient’s possible to live in the present and future health issues to consider, a person’s lifestyle and expectations are evaluated after, and most importantly, the patient should be sufficiently informed about all the positive and negative aspects of the procedure were to be proposed after,” said Prof. Dr. underlined the issues to be considered regarding the smart lens:

  • For close and intermediate distance vision without glasses with multifocal intraocular lenses, a person will have to sacrifice the quality of vision at varying rates. Some models are close, some are far away, some have decoupling distance results are better.
    .
  • Almost all patients who use these lenses have uncomfortable light games, which we call dysphotopia, at varying rates, and patients should be warned about these possible complaints in advance.
    .
  • Multi-focus lenses impair contrast sensitivity and vision ability in low-light environments more than standard lenses.
    .
  • People with sensitive and detailed vision needs to stay away from multi-focus lenses due to the side effects mentioned above.
    .
  • These lenses should not be applied to young patients who do not have any eye problems, only with the promise of recovery from glasses.
    .
  • Multifocal lenses should definitely not be used in people with eye problems other than cataracts, especially people with retinal diseases such as yellow spot disease, diabetic retinopathy. These negatively affect the quality of vision of people with retinal disease.
    .
  • The placement of multifocal lenses in the eye is a surgical procedure, and this operation also has its own risks and complications.

Prof. Doctor said, “There have undoubtedly been great developments in the field of multi-focus lenses over the years. Thanks to improvements in both lens design and surgical technique, significant reductions in side effects and complications, and significant improvements in vision comfort were noted. The choice of patient and model has been made correctly, provided that the patient is adequately informed about the realistic expectations, benefits and risks, it has reached a point that promises a significant improvement in the quality of life for many cases,” he concluded his words as follows:

“There is no smart lens. There are smart patients who, without heeding the advertising, can choose the lens that is most suitable for them based on recommendations of an eye doctor in Turkey whose experience and honesty they will trust.” was said.
