THE REPORT OF THE STUDY ON OBESITY NEWS WAS ANNOUNCED

The Obesity Research Association of Turkey said, “My role is heavy, so what is your role?” within the scope of the project, the obesity news research report in Turkey, which he conducted, was announced. Ankara University Faculty of Communication Faculty Member Prof. Dr. shared important information about the report of the research.

The Obesity Research Association of Turkey is working to draw attention to the stigma and discrimination in obesity as part of the awareness project, he organized workshops for members of the media. In order to prevent stigma and discrimination in obesity in the media, written and visual media content evaluations were made and media guide was shared in the workshops held to prevent obesity stigma and discrimination in the media. At the same time, a study was conducted to see the course of obesity news in Turkey within the scope of the project. The aim of the study was to reveal how obesity-related news is represented in the media in 2021. In this context, a total of 80 thousand news articles on obesity published nationally, locally and online in Turkey in the first four and last four months of 2021 were analyzed in detail. Prof. Dr. drew attention to the important issues contained in the report.

.
STEREOTYPING HAS DECREASED IN THE USE OF NEWS VISUALS

According to the study, while non-obese individuals were given less space in the main images in the news in the first four months (16.9%), more space was given to the images of non-obese people in the last four months (24.1%).

Stereotyped images (scale-tape measure-refrigerator, etc.) while there was more space in the first four months (12%), stereotyped images found less space in the last four months (6%). The inclusion of images of people without obesity in the news and the fact that stereotyped visual use has started to decrease have been evaluated as a positive and remarkable development.

According to the research report, the weighing scale, tape measure, refrigerator, fast food, etc., which are associated with obesity in news images, the use of symbols negatively shapes the opinion of society about obesity. The bodies tucked into the tape measure, on the scale or scale, reinforce the perception of the built-in ideal weight.

.
IT’S NOT A DISEASE FOR WHICH HE WILL HOLD HIMSELF RESPONSIBLE

In the examined news images, obese individuals who hold ready-made, unhealthy foods in their hands and keep a distance from healthy foods are presented as people who do not have willpower. The need for obese individuals to control themselves or what they eat is often repeated, and it is thought that these repetitions will provide motivation to patients. But the repeated emphasis on ”control” causes people to be depressed, creating a feeling that they have to cope with this disease because they cannot control themselves. However, obesity is not a will problem, nor is it just a disease for which the person himself will be held responsible.

.
THE RANKING OF THE CAUSES OF OBESITY HAS CHANGED!

Multi-agent obesity is a disease which, in the first four months among the causes of excessive and wrong eating habits (20%), insufficient physical activity (18%), technology and modern life conditions (7%), while the second four months, excessive and wrong eating habits (%20,1), insufficient physical activity (%15) with hormonal and metabolic factors (%5) took place in. The news that technology and modern living conditions cause obesity usually consists of news that addresses childhood obesity. It is a positive development that hormonal and metabolic factors, which are considered to be among the medical causes of obesity in the news in the second four months of the year, are among the top three causes. Decadal decadalizations are a positive development in the news in the second four months of the year. In addition, insufficient physical activity, which causes discrimination and stigma, is among the first three Dec in the second four months, but there seems to be a decrease here. The increasing frequency of news coverage of the causes of obesity leads to a better understanding of the disease and its solutions by society.

.
THE LEVEL OF INFORMATIVENESS HAS INCREASED

The report, which also examined the use of language in obesity news, shared data on news headlines. It was noted that 69% of news headlines in the first four months were informative and explanatory, and in the second four months this figure reached 88%. Disturbing or alarming headlines in the news were 23% in the first four months and 9% in the second four months; dramatizing headlines were 3% in the first four months and 2% in the second four months. The informative content of news headlines has increased in the last four months compared to the first four months.

.
THE TONE OF THE NEWS HAS IMPROVED

It was noted that 84% of the news published in the first four months and 92% of the news published in the second four months were informative and explanatory in terms of the expressions used in the news texts and the way they described the events. It was noted that 11% of the news in the first four months and 7% in the second four months were of an alarming or alarming nature. Dramatic news fell from 5% in the first four months to 2% in the last four months.

.
ANXIETY ABOUT BEING READ AND CLICKED MAKES IT A TARGET

According to the research, an inappropriate language and style are used to increase the reading rate in the news about people who are not hired because of their weight, celebrities who are not given roles or projects, or individuals whose weight prevents them from achieving success. Such news can lead to the fact that weight is associated with failure, while reproducing the perception of the body. On the other hand, the expressions used in the news about the discrimination suffered by obese people, especially in their working lives, create the idea that individuals are unsuccessful, lazy and incompetent.

At the same time, according to the report, which says that obesity disease is presented as an economic burden in the news; The emphasis on the cost of obesity treatment causes the disease to be individualized by ignoring environmental, structural, political, and many other reasons. It is known that the media reaches a wide audience with the content it produces, and the perception created through news and news plays an important role in shaping social thought.

.
UNSCIENTIFIC METHODS DISTRACT FROM THE CORRECT TREATMENT

The research report said that the emergence of obesity is caused by more than one factor, and at the same time there are multiple methods of treating obesity. The physician-patient cooperation, as well as environmental factors, obesity and the importance of psychological support in a non-scientific method be introduced as a treatment of individuals, drug therapy, endoscopic therapy, surgical therapy, and psychological therapy, such as the correct treatment away from the development of health policies at the same time announced that it would not overlook the necessity of a cause.

In the conclusion of the report, it was stated that the media has the power to change and guide the thoughts, perspectives and behaviors of society about obesity with the rhetoric used by the media, and therefore it is possible to notice and change discriminatory and stigmatizing rhetoric about obesity in society primarily by correcting the rhetoric in the media.

The report also stated that similar content related to the representation of obesity in the media continues to be produced worldwide, revealed through academic studies, and that efforts to raise awareness of obesity stigma are also leading the way in body affirmation. It was also noted that if the media content continues in its current form, the perception of the disease will mediate the wrong location and the continuation of discriminatory and stigmatizing rhetoric.
