Our association has a periodical scientific publication published in four issues per year since 2007 under the name “TDD: Turkish Journal of Dermatology”. As of 2015, the journal is on the “Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI)” list and is on track for inclusion in SCI-expanded. As of December 2015, European diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines for common major dermatological diseases are provided together with the journal.

Does your association have a Qualification Board? Is a qualification exam held, if any? Can you tell me about these exams?

Our association has a Qualification Board since 2004. However, it is worth noting that the Turkish Dermatology Qualification Board is autonomous, except for the participation of a member who will coordinate with the association. Since 2008, our “Dermatology winter school” application, which is given free of charge to all final year specialty students in December every year with the planning of the Qualification Board and unconditional financial support of the Turkish Dermatology Association, is very highly appreciated. In addition, work is underway to conduct a “skills training” course for assistants in their second/third year in the first months of 2016. Board; Since 2009, it has been regularly holding a dermatology specialty training Congress every year.

Skin and Venereal Diseases proficiency exam has been held regularly every year since 2010. First, the theoretical part of the exam is performed, and specialist doctors who succeed in this exam are taken to the practice (skill) exam. Since 2014, these exams are administered simultaneously in Ankara and Istanbul by the Examination Commission, which works under the Qualification Board. So far, 51 of our experts have received a “qualification certificate” with these exams.

Can you give information about the Congress and other scientific events organized by your association?

Our association organizes the “National dermatology congress”once every two years. A large number of courses, panels, symposiums and conferences are also organized within the scope of the Congress. The last Congress was held in October 2014. 26 from 19-23 October 2016. We’re going to hold the National Congress of Dermatology. We provide registration and accommodation support to our 100 assistants and experts who participated in this Congress with a statement. We will also welcome our colleagues past the age of sixty-five at our Congress. We will present our proposal to the General Assembly that the National Congress be held every year now.

“Dermatology Post-specialty Education Board (DUSEK)” was established by the decision of the General Assembly in October 2014 for the planned execution of continuing education after specialization. The board also evaluated requests from members and organized a two-day “all-round hair” course with wide participation in Ankara and Istanbul. The announcement of the “Dermatoallergia course” to be held in Ankara on January 16 prompted a very high demand for participation. The interest in these courses, all expenses of which are covered by our association, makes us happy. DUSEK prepares presentation videos of trainers on designated subjects within the framework of a program and allows all our members to watch online, that is, decentralized training.

Our association regularly gives foreign education, foreign Congress and research project scholarships to our assistants and experts every year under separate titles. In 2015, 564 thousand TL was spent on 38 scholarships/project support. Our similar support for 2016 will continue.

Do the Association have Scientific Working Groups?

Our association has 12 active working groups. Expert members of the Turkish Society of Dermatology can become members of working groups created on issues of interest. Multi-center studies, skill guides and patient information guides have been produced by our working groups and these studies continue uninterrupted. In addition, at the moment, both books have been printed as the work of our working groups and distributed free of charge to our members. Finally, a decision has been made to establish a” Working Group on Occupational Diseases ” and requests for participation are collected.

Are there any international organizations that are members? What are the joint studies?

Our association is a member of”European Dermatology Board “and” international Dermatology League (ILDS)”. We are in close relationship with the” European Society of Dermatology and Venerology (EADV)”. Behind the EADV Congress held in Istanbul in 2013, our association was also a legal entity. At the last World dermatology congress, where ILDs was a regulator, we held a panel “with the status of sister associations”. During these periods, we support the participation of our competent colleagues in this field in order to strengthen relations with many working groups around the world.

Do you find the specialized training time for your branch sufficient/excessive?

The duration of teaching as a specialty student is four years and this period is sufficient. Already, the core training curriculum for skin and Venereal Diseases specialty training, which was approved and entered into force by the medical specialty board on June 9, 2015, has been established with the opinion of all our members and the joint work of the qualification board members and TUKMOS members to be taken as an example. Cosmetic applications and initiatives are now included in the basic applications within the scope of specialized training. Rotations introduced by this arrangement are also generally accepted.

Is there a shortage or excess in the number of doctors related to your branch in Turkey?

We do not consider the area of skin and venereal diseases expertise as just disease diagnosis and treatment. For the last 20 years, people have been coming to skin and venereal diseases specialists for corrective, supportive and cosmetic applications, receiving recommendations regarding their appearance other than diseases. With developments in this area, there is an increasing demand for experts.

What are the goals that your association intends to achieve in the short or long term?

Next month, we plan to distribute patient information brochures about common skin diseases throughout Turkey. We aim to make all experts members of our association and reach out to all our colleagues. We aim to provide registration accommodation support to at least 150 assistants/experts for the National Congress we will hold every year. With the proceeds of these congresses, we aim to publish video seminars on the topics of Dermatology’s core training program on the web through DUSEK via “webcast”, to make live presentations and to organize courses in many cities of Turkey on weekends. Our goal is to become a Turkish Dermatology Association that has embraced all its colleagues and is in constant positive communication with them.
