CAN HICCUPS THAT DON’T GO AWAY BE A HARBINGER OF DISEASE?

An associate professor who explains that the causes of stubborn hiccups that do not go away should be investigated. Central nervous system tumors, stroke, Parkinson’s, head trauma, meningitis, chest cavity cancers, enlarged lymph nodes; coronary insufficiency, esophageal tumors and reflux are among the possible causes of hiccups that do not pass.

Short and long-term hiccups are divided into 2 and can be explained reasons as follows: “factors such as fast and heavy eating, alcohol, spice and soda consumption, very cold and hot eating, air swallowing (as a result of chewing gum), stress are the most common causes of short-term hiccups. If hiccups are long-lasting, problems such as inflammation, tumors, trauma and infection should come to mind, which can concern different branches of science such as gastroenterology, neurology, pulmonology and cardiology.

Central nervous system tumors, stroke, Parkinson’s, head trauma, meningitis, multiple sclerosis; cancers that hold the chest cavity, enlarged lymph nodes; coronary insufficiency, esophageal tumors, reflux and Helicobacter pylori infection are among the possible causes of hiccups.

Not just diseases, but sometimes drugs and chemotherapeutics can initiate hiccups; drugs used in psychiatry and Parkinson’s treatments, cortisone and morphine can rank in this group. Stubborn hiccups can also occur after interventions on the esophagus and AC’s (such as bronchoscopy, stent insertion), general anesthesia, and surgery.”

Breathing into a paper bag, holding your breath, drinking cold water, straining, eating lemon and granulated sugar, lifting the small tongue up with a spoon, bringing the knees closer to the rib cage and staying in this position for a while can help massage the eyeball and carotid (neck vein). If the symptom lasts or repeats for a long time, it is necessary to consult a doctor in Turkey.
