IS YOUR CHILD’S HEIGHT SHORTER THAN THEIR AGE?

Stating that all children should be monitored between certain intervals, even if they are healthy, against short stature, Pediatric Endocrinologist Professor Doctor “If the growth is outside the standard, a doctor should definitely be consulted,” was said.

One of the most important features of childhood is constant growth. At the end of this growth process, which starts from the prenatal period and accelerates its pace after birth until adolescence, slows down but continues continuously, the child reaches adult height. But sometimes growth slows down and stops, says Pediatric Endocrinologist Prof.Dr. explained the causes of short stature in children, ways of diagnosis and treatment as follows.

.
IT’S USUALLY GENETIC, BUT

Growth is one of the most important criteria of being healthy, so having a normal growth is one of the most important criteria of being healthy. A child who grows up normally is a healthy child. What a person’s height will be depends on genetic factors by 75 percent, that is, the height of the parents is the most important criterion determining the adult height of the child. But if the parents of short stature have tall individuals in their families, the height of the child may exceed the genetic average. Height growth stops on average 3 years after menstruation in girls, and on average around the age of 18 in boys.

.
THE FIRST YEAR IS IMPORTANT

The fastest period of growth is the period from birth to the first birthday. In the first year, the baby’s height increases by 24 cm, and his weight averages 10 kg. After the first age, growth slows down and there is an average growth of 12 cm in height, weight gain is up to 2.3 kg. Between the ages of two and three, there is an increase in height by 10 cm, and the weight gain is up to dec kg. Then, by the age of 10-12, boys and girls grow on average by 5-6 cm. On average, girls reach puberty at the age of 10, boys at the age of 12, and during this period, the height of girls increases by 20-25 cm, and boys – by 25-30 cm. Children who are in the lower curves of the growth curves should be examined by pediatric endocrinologists. If the growth curves are falling, growing less than 5 cm per year in childhood, an examination is still required.

.
A BALANCED DIET IS A MUST

Nutritional disorders, hormonal causes, family causes, chronic diseases are other causes of short stature… A balanced diet is essential for normal growth. Food with children required protein amounts (milk, yogurt, cheese, eggs and meat), fat, carbohydrate (bread, etc), vegetables and fruits, vitamins and minerals (all nutrients) should take. Children often tend to eat foods that are low in nutritional value, such as sugary foods, waffles, chips, etc. Growth can also be restored by correcting the nutrition of a malnourished child.

.
HOW TO UNDERSTAND IT?

Whether the child’s height is normal or not is evaluated using percentile curves prepared from the height values of healthy children. The height of a healthy child is located dec the 3rd and 97th percentile lines on the curve and continues on the same curve throughout childhood. It is pathological and requires examination if the child’s height is below the 3rd percentile in the percentile curves, or if it is within the normal percentile curves, it shows a fall in the curve over time, or if the child’s height is short according to his parents. Monitoring of growth is carried out by family doctors and pediatricians.

.
WHAT ARE THE WAYS OF TREATMENT?

The treatment and duration of treatment for growth disorders vary depending on the underlying cause. For example, hypothyroidism requires lifelong treatment. In growth hormone deficiency, hormone therapy continues until the long bones close up, roughly at the age of 13-15 years.

.
ATTENTION TO SUBSTANCES THAT ARE ALLEGEDLY LENGTHENING

It is seen that there are words about elongation and growth in the market name, some products stated to be sold with the permission of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs under the name of “food supplement” or imported from Far Eastern countries using it in the form of foot insoles lengthen the length, even after the age of 20, many sites advertise, sometimes in the media, especially on the Internet that it provides elongation even after the age of 20. But it is unlikely that the neck will grow longer with such nutritional additives and medicines. On the contrary, it can harm health.
