HISTORY OF NURSES DAY
Dorothy Sutherland, First an official at the U.S. Department of Health and education, was appointed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1953. He meets with Eisenhower and offers to declare between of the following year “Nurses Day”. However, this proposal was not approved at the time. In 1972, an attempt was made to prepare an official statement in recognition of this important day and submitted to the National House of Representatives. But again, this proposal is not approved.
Two years later, the International Council of nurses declares May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, “International Nurses Day.” In the same year, the term is finally decided by the signature of US President Nixon. In other words, since May 12, 1974, Nurses ‘ Day has officially started to be celebrated.
