WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF DYSLEXIA?

Dyslexia is the most common learning disability and usually affects a person throughout his or her life. Dyslexia, which is widely seen in Turkish children in society, negatively affects a child’s school success. Dyslexia can be accompanied by other problems, Turkish experts say, pointing to the importance of early diagnosis. So, what is Dyslexia? How is dyslexia understood? All the details that are curious about its symptoms and treatment are in our news.

Learning to speak late, difficulty pronouncing words, difficulty distinguishing different sounds in words, changing the location of letters in words when reading and writing, difficulty putting thoughts on paper, making too many typos and having difficulty remembering lists, recipes and events, such as symptoms of dyslexia, we have compiled for you in our news what you need to know about… what is Dyslexia? How is dyslexia understood? Symptoms and treatment in Turkey.

.
WHAT IS DYSLEXIA?

Dyslexia, also known as genius’s disease, is a learning disorder that makes reading, speaking sounds, and related letters and words difficult. It is the most common learning disability and usually affects a person throughout his or her life. Children suffering from dyslexia are not mentally or cognitively impaired, and the disorder is not the product of a visual or auditory problem.

The degree of dyslexia varies from person to person, whether mild or severe. Dyslexia is most common when the child is of school age, usually in primary school; at this point parents, teachers, and health professionals can distinguish it at school and while studying.

.
SYMPTOMS OF DYSLEXIA

Because dyslexia creates difficulty reading, many parents will not be able to understand that it is a problem until their children reach school age. However, there are several indicators to consider in the early period. These include:

– Difficulty creating words, such as mixing sounds

– Delays in learning new words

– Problems learning or singing rhymes

A child may experience the following when they start school:

– Below average reading level

– Difficulty seeing, hearing or speaking different sounds

– Misspelling words and / or writing irregular writing

– Being unable to remember rankings (such as numbers or letters)

– It takes a very long time to finish reading and writing exercises

Young people and adults also struggle with such problems. In addition, they have trouble understanding jokes or idioms, understanding words, or trying to learn a new language.

.
HOW IS DYSLEXIA UNDERSTOOD?

There are several varieties of dyslexia. These;

– Primary Type Dyslexic

The most common species is the primary species. It occurs when there is a dysfunction in the cerebral cortex. The primary type is hereditary, and those with this type of disorder have it throughout their lives.

– Secondary Type Dyslexic

It begins in the early stages of brain development during Fetal development. Unlike the primary type, this form will decrease with age. It is more common in boys than in girls.

– Trauma Type Dyslexic

It occurs when there is a physical injury in the brain area that controls reading and writing.

– Visual and auditory dyslexic

It causes problems in interpreting visual and auditory signals. A person with a vision type may have difficulty following sequences when writing, while an auditory type will make it difficult for a person to correctly perceive sounds.

If the child is suspected to have dyslexia, it is important to act early so that the difficulties of reading and writing will not affect him later.

.
DYSLEXIA TREATMENT

There are some factors that a healthcare professional should consider in order to make a diagnosis and assess the severity of the disease. An expert on dyslexia conducts tests to see how a child perceives visual and auditory information, as well as academic performance. There is no cure for dyslexia, but there are a few things children can do to help them cope with learning difficulties at an early age. It is particularly important that parents and health workers take care of the child’s school and create an education plan. Children with dyslexia may need special educational tools such as technology (computers, tablets and educational games) or extra time to complete in-class work. Coping with dyslexia at an early age is crucial to the desire to gain confidence, to learn.

DYSLEXIA EXPERTS WARN

Assist. Assoc. Dr. dyslexia is a learning disorder characterized by difficulty reading or difficulty understanding reading, stating that “specific learning disorder is a very important diagnosis. There are four important pillars to this. Dyslexia is one of those feet. If a child has difficulty writing, dysgraphia, if they have difficulty in maths and computation, dyscalculia, or a weakness in motor skills, called dystraxia, has types. Dyslexia is the most common. That’s why he’s better known among the public. Learning disorders often coexist. The child usually has difficulty reading, difficulty writing, however, as he grows up a little, he experiences problems such as difficulty calculating,” he warned.

.
IT AFFECTS ALL LIFE

He noted that learning disorders are a group of neurodevelopmental disorders. Assoc. Dr. “These disorders have a biological basis and genetic causes. But genetics does not necessarily have to be seen in the mother or father. It may not have been revealed in the parents or relatives, but it may have appeared in the child. So the biological cause brings to mind that, in fact, learning disorder is an innate and lifelong disorder that affects all life. But this discomfort is more understood when school starts, when reading difficulties begin, and only during this period is the specialist referred,” he said.

.
THEY LEARN COLORS LATE

Assistant who noted that learning difficulties also manifest themselves in various ways in preschool period. Assoc. Dr. “Late speech can manifest itself in the form of difficulty subtracting letters, subtracting letters differently, or in the form of late learning colors, late learning numbers,” was said.

An assist stating that sometimes families notice learning difficulties late. Assoc. Doctor, “early diagnosis is very important. Because as the diagnosis is made late, the amount of things that the child cannot learn also increases. The teacher’s warning is a guide. If a child has a learning problem, they should contact a child adolescent psychiatrist. It’s important to make a diagnosis here. Is it a learning disorder, an intelligence problem, or another mental problem? It’s very important to first make the diagnosis and then move on. A child who is weak to learn can’t learn anyway, this child should not say so. It is absolutely necessary to investigate the cause. Because these children do not have an intelligence problem, but it can be seen that they have difficulty perceiving it as if they have an intelligence problem. That’s why it’s so important not to be late. It’s very difficult to make up for the longer it gets late,” he said.

Assist. Assoc. Dr. noted that if exam grades are below his intelligence, if they are below his capacity, then he should definitely be suspected of learning difficulties.

.
CONFUSED WITH ADHD

“We know that children cannot learn under stress,” said, noting that there are too many factors affecting learning, and sometimes some accompanying disorders can also affect learning. Stress, an event or condition that upsets the child, anxiety disorder, obsessions, or tics can affect learning. All this can negatively affect the learning process. However, the lack of attention that we see most often. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) failure to pay attention is also associated with too many learning disorders, as the child quickly forgets what he has learned, cannot learn enough, and the learning speed will be slow. One point we encounter very often is that they are seen together. Because a child with a learning disorder questions why he does not learn because his intelligence is normal, after a while, if he does not receive treatment, his self-confidence begins to drop. He begins to get depressed, he can despair, thinking that he will not learn. He pulls himself back completely. For this reason, we can often see that learning difficulties are sometimes accompanied by depression or anxiety disorder,” he warned.

.
INTELLIGENCE TESTING CAN BE DONE

“It may be necessary to view the brain, an intelligence test may be needed,” said, noting that the child was first given a psychiatric examination and then the necessary tests were determined. Applying a learning battery may require an attention test. Because there can be more different problems underlying the problem of learning disabilities. Therefore, it is important to make a very comprehensive assessment,” he warned. Doctor in Turkey stated that the first option for children in the treatment process is not medication, but he noted that preventing the use of drugs in necessary cases harms the child. He said that in addition to medication, sensory integration, ergotherapy or speech therapy were used.
