WHY EUROPEAN UNION BANS E171 IN FOODS
- The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is preparing to ban the substance used to whiten food products because food coloring called E171 can be a cause of human cancer.

- Titanium dioxide, or E171, the food dye used to whiten food products, may be banned by EFSA in the European Union (EU) countries. E171, used in chewing gum, white chocolate, toothpaste and foods made for babies, can be considered a cause of cancer. The French government banned the use of E171in in 2019, but it was determined that the food dye in question was widely used in other EU countries.

- “Following EFSA’s new scientific opinion on the food additive E171, we will recommend banning its use in the EU,” European Union Health Commissioner said. The chemical contains genotoxicity, the ability to damage the DNA, EFSA said in thousands of new studies.
