PANDEMIC WARNINGS FOR ASTHMA SUFFERERS
Asthma in Turkey can only be controlled with proper and regular treatment, said an Associate Professor of Pulmonology. Turkish Doctor “Patients should not forget this fact in the pandemic,” was said. Assoc. Dr. warned asthma patients not to risk themselves during the pandemic.
Asthma, which is considered one of the diseases of the age, is seen in our country in one out of every 7-8 children and every 12-13 adults. The disease, which is manifested by shortness of breath, can be life-threatening with frequent and severe attacks if it is not controlled.
Turkey Medicals member and Turkey Chest Diseases Specialist Associate Doctor described the rules that asthma patients in Turkey must follow to avoid risking themselves during the pandemic.
.
1. HOW IS IT TREATED?
Asthma is a disease that can be controlled. In this way, a person can continue his normal active life; he can play sports, play games, go to school, work, sleep healthy. The aim of asthma treatment is to relieve the patient, to ensure that he continues his daily activities and to prevent attacks. For this purpose, first of all, if there is a known trigger factor, it should be eliminated. Preventive (controlling) and breath-opening (relaxing, saving) drugs are used in the treatment. These drugs act quickly, relieving the patient.
.
2. DO SPRAYS MAKE A HABIT?
Asthma medications are in the form of inhalers (sprays), directly affect the airways, have very few side effects, and are reliable medications. Even if they are used every day for years, they are not addictive and do not damage the lungs.
.
3. WHAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED IN THIS PROCESS?
Asthma patients, like many patients during the pandemic period, are afraid to go to hospitals in Antalya and Istanbul for fear of ‘catching the virus’. This condition can cause disruptions in the control and treatment of patients, increasing the risk of attacks. Asthma is not a risk factor for Covid-19. Studies have shown that the incidence of Covid-19 and the risk of death associated with Covid-19 in asthma patients do not increase. But Covid-19 is more severe in patients whose asthma is not under control. For this reason, during the pandemic period, it is very important that asthma patients use their medications regularly and without reducing their doses and keep their diseases under control. Asthma patients during the pandemic period should also follow the rules of mask, physical distance and hygiene, avoid risk factors that may cause an attack, get vaccinated and definitely contact their doctor when they have complaints.
.
4. WHAT PROBLEMS CAN QUITTING DRUGS CAUSE?
If the drugs are left, the disease progresses and becomes difficult to control. The frequency of attacks and the weight of attacks increases even more. In this case, it may be necessary to increase drug doses and use drugs with more side effects.
