10 MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT ASTHMA THAT ARE THOUGHT TO BE TRUE
Asthma, which manifests itself by narrowing of the airways and is accompanied by asthma attacks, is a fairly common disease in the world and in our country. So much so that about 4 million people in our country are struggling with asthma. But some erroneous information that is considered true about asthma in society can lead to patients disrupting their treatment. So what erroneous thoughts complicate the lives of asthma sufferers? Prof. Dr. told about 10 erroneous information about asthma that is considered correct in society.
In asthma, a chronic disease, problems such as shortness of breath, dry cough, chest pressure, wheezing or wheezing that develop with attacks, if they cannot be controlled, the quality of life can seriously decrease, moreover, the patient may end up losing their lives. Pulmonologist Prof. Doctor said that asthma attacks that can occur at almost any age can actually be controlled with proper and regular treatment, and listed 10 erroneous information about asthma that is considered correct in society:
1- Asthma is a progressive disease
The truth is: Unlike COPD, asthma is less likely to progress over time. Asthma can be controlled completely, especially with the right use of medication and regular follow-up by a doctor in Turkey. Pulmonologist Prof. Doctor emphasizes that the disease can have a negative course despite the correct use of inhaler drugs in a very small proportion of patients, saying that these patients may often have to use cortisone orally or in the form of a needle.
2- Asthma only occurs in people with an allergic nature
The truth is: Contrary to popular belief in society, not all asthma patients have an allergic nature. 30-40 percent of asthma patients develop asthma due to non-allergic factors called ‘non-allergic asthma’. Due to factors such as frequent respiratory infections, occupational and environmental exposure to harmful factors, hypersensitivity to the airways occurs in these people, and as a result, asthma may develop.
3- Asthmatic patients cannot play sports
The truth is: There is a widespread belief in society that asthmatic patients cannot play sports and have to restrict their activities. However, after the disease is controlled, asthma sufferers can do all kinds of sports. For example, swimming is a particularly recommended sport in asthma because it works the muscles in the body.
4- Asthma only makes you short of breath
The truth is: asthma can be observed in some patients without shortness of breath, only with a cough. Pulmonologist Prof. Dr. “This type of asthma usually has a cough complaint that wakes you up from sleep at night and increases with heavy odors such as exercise, cigarette smoke, perfume and food smell,” said, emphasizing that asthma with a cough variant should come to mind with complaints of a prolonged cough.
5- Asthma patients experience constant shortness of breath problems
To be honest: The most important feature of asthma is that it causes variable airway obstruction. Therefore, the information that asthma patients have constant shortness of breath problems is not true. Sometimes, asthma symptoms can begin to develop in an asthma patient who has no complaints for weeks or even months, usually as a result of a viral infection or exposure to excessive amounts of allergens. Severe asthmatics, who make up 5 percent of all asthma patients, can have problems such as constant shortness of breath and coughing. And in 95 percent of patients, the symptoms appear intermittently.
6- Asthma that occurs in childhood continues for life
As a matter of fact: asthma is a disease that is detected more in men in childhood and more in women in adulthood. In asthma that occurs in childhood, complaints can completely pass at a certain age. For example, complaints can disappear in between years of 6 – 7 when lung development is mature. If complaints persist after this period, it can be observed that asthma complaints are completely resolved, especially in boys after puberty.
7- Asthma does not occur at an advanced age
The truth is: Asthma usually begins in childhood and adolescence. But this does not mean that asthma will not develop at an older age. Asthma can begin in middle age, as well as in the population over the age of 60, as a result of the fact that the bronchi that are hypersensitive are triggered for any reason.
8- Asthma medication is not used during pregnancy
The truth is: a significant part of asthma medications can be used during pregnancy. Due to the fact that asthmatic pregnant women do not take medication, they constantly have shortness of breath problems that can stress the baby and cause him to be without oxygen. As a result, serious consequences such as miscarriage, premature birth, and the baby’s inability to develop adequately can occur. Emphasizing that there is no harm in using both cortisone and bronchodilator drugs taken by inhalation in asthma as much as the patient needs during pregnancy, Prof. Dr. “If a pregnant woman with asthma has nasal complaints, cortisone spray and antihistamine drops used from the nose do not cause problems. In pregnant women with more severe asthma, cortisone can also be applied to the tablet or via a needle if necessary,” he said.
9- Drugs used to treat asthma cause harm
The truth is: Cortisone sprays used to treat asthma do not enter the blood in normal doses and cause a permanent side effect. He said that side effects such as hoarseness and sores in the mouth can occur especially in cases where the patient cannot rinse his mouth with water after using the drug. Dr. “The other group that can be found in asthma sprays are bronchodilator drugs. Side effects of these drugs, such as palpitations, tremors, and muscle cramps, are also rarely seen. However, these side effects may pass with a short break in the medication, and if they are continued, they begin to decelerate after a while,” he said.
10- Going to places with a beautiful climate suffers from asthma
The truth is: asthma, which is a chronic disease, can be more severe in some climatic and weather conditions. Especially extremely humid, polluted areas with air caused by traffic and industry pose a significant problem in terms of asthma. In some asthma patients, the complaints improve even when these environmental factors are removed. But this state of well-being is valid only as long as the patients stay in this area. When patients return to the city with air pollution, their complaints return to their former state in a very short time.
