ASTHMA ATTACKS THAT DECREASED DURING THE PANDEMIC IN CHILDREN HAVE RETURNED MORE SEVERE THIS YEAR

Turkey Medicals member and hospital clinic Pediatric Immunology and Allergy, Pulmonology Prof. Dr. said that this year, viral infections such as flu, adenovirus, rhinovirus have started to appear again, and children have been admitted to clinics with more severe asthma attacks than in previous years.

The quarantines imposed in the pandemic ensured that the attacks of children with asthma or pollen-related allergic rhinitis decreased, while disinfectants and various chemical products that were used abundantly in the beginning with hygiene concerns triggered skin allergies.

The opening of schools to adopt normalization, and the use of the mask seen them for almost 2 years because it does not pay as much attention, influenza, adenovirus, rhinovirus, such as other seasonal outbreaks of viral diseases is starting to be seen again this year, most affected children with asthma.

In the course of children’s allergies, many changes during and after the pandemic, pointing out that Turkey’s National Allergy and Clinical Immunology and Allergy Immunology and a member of the Society of children’s Emory University School of Medicine, Department of chest diseases Professor Doctor made important statements…

.
ASTHMA DECREASED IN CLOSURES SKIN ALLERGIES INCREASED

Emphasizing that the Covid pandemic has important effects on allergic diseases as well as on all diseases, Prof. Dr. stated that:

“When we looked at the distribution and impact of allergic diseases, especially in the first year, when there was a lot of quarantine, children were closed at home, did not attend school, we observed significant reductions in asthma attacks. This has happened in our country as well as in the whole world. Because one of the biggest triggers in children with asthma is viral infections. Children, for 2 years, also had a decrease in asthma attacks, as they were not exposed to community-acquired viral infections.

We have not seen almost any asthmatic child applications in our asthma clinics during this period. But besides that, there has been a lot of increase in skin allergies. COVID-19 has already caused the urticaria, angioedema table by itself. In particular, we have seen a very dec increase in skin allergies, popularly known as hives, such as urticaria angioedema.

Again, in the indoor environment, a lot of disinfectants and detergents were used for the first time; we were wiping all household items with these substances. We have observed a very large increase in atopic dermatitis, eczema due to excessive use of disinfectants and detergents, as these cause a deterioration in the skin barrier. Then, already in the following periods, instead of using disinfectants, alcoholic, that is, irritant substances, we directed our citizens to soap and water more.”

.
OTHER VIRAL INFECTIONS HAVE FARED WORSE THAN COVID THIS YEAR

Explaining that it is now better to learn how to manage Covid disease and that life has been normalized with the introduction of vaccines, Prof. Doctor “And this year, Turkish public schools and private schools have been opened,” said. Because children have been at home in Turkey for 2 years, have not socialized and have not gone to school, their immune systems have declined compared to the previous year. We have never seen community-acquired infections in 2 years. They suddenly appeared this year and caused very violent pictures. For example, influenza, RSV, parainfluenza, bokavirus, adenovirus rhinovirus sounded so severe that they caused even more severe pictures in children than COVID-19 itself. That is why this year, asthma attacks have returned much more violently than before.”

.
THE MASK ALSO PROTECTS FROM POLLEN

Stating that a large decrease in air pollution was observed especially at the first time in Covid-19 and, accordingly, nature revived at once, Prof. Dr. Bingöl pointed out that this year will be a little more difficult for children who have had an allergic attack due to pollen and concluded his words as follows:

“There has also been a large increase in pollen-related complaints. We are currently in the pollen season and symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, nasal congestion due to pollen occur very often. The same symptoms can be observed with Omicron and some viral infections. It is extremely important to distinguish it. If the child has a runny nose, sneezing, runny nose, congestion, and simultaneously there are headaches, joint pains, fever, and severe coughs, then a doctor should be consulted for COVID-19 or serious viral infections.

But if the child already has an allergic rhinitis and shows mild symptoms, it is possible to control them with allergy medications. And we’re actually glad that we don’t use masks outside anymore. But continuing to use a mask somewhere also protects us from pollen. So in fact, it will be very good for those with allergic diseases (especially those with allergic diseases) to extend the use of masks a little longer during this spring period, both to prevent community-acquired viral infections and to protect them from the effects of COVID and pollen”
