WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF GENITAL WARTS AND HOW ARE THEY TRANSMITTED?

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the most common and the most contagious infection. There are more than 200 types of HPV virus. The vast majority of these types, at most types 6 and 11, lead to genital warts (condylomas) in men and women.

The most common and most well-known way of transmission is sexual intercourse. In addition, HPV can also be transmitted by friction without full vaginal intercourse and, although very rarely, by skin contact with surfaces carrying the virus (towels, toilets, personal belongings, swimming pools, baths, etc.).

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

Genital wart; gives a symptom in the form of skin-colored or darker skin surface blisters in the genital area. These bumps may be a few small ones one by one, or they may gradually grow and appear in the form of cauliflower. Warts can merge with each other and completely cover the genital area, as well as disappear spontaneously in 30% of patients.

HOW IS THE DIAGNOSIS MADE IN TURKEY?

Diagnosis can be easily made by Turkish physical examination, sometimes it may be necessary to take a biopsy.

DOES GENITAL WARTS LEAD TO CANCER?

The HPV types responsible for genital warts are low-risk types and do not lead to cancer. But in addition to low-risk HPV, there may also be high-risk HPV. For this reason, it is essential to evaluate the presence of high-risk HPV with an HPV genotype test in patients with genital diseases.
