PANDEMIC WORRIES DENTISTS ABOUT THE FUTURE FOR THEIR JOB

According to survey conducted for the Istanbul Chamber of dentists, 78 percent of Turkey dentists are concerned about the future of their work, while for young dentists in Turkey this figure rises to 93 percent. On the other hand, the survey also found that dentists experience many negative emotions, such as fear of losing their health during the pandemic, anxiety about carrying infections to their relatives and patients, and social phobia.

The survey revealed the fears and concerns experienced by dentists during the pandemic process, as well as their thoughts on the future of their work. According to the survey, 78 percent of dentists, that is, 4 out of every 5 dentists, are concerned about the future about their work. This figure increases to 93 percent in young dentists under the age of 29.

THEY ARE CONCERNED ABOUT CARRYING INFECTIONS TO THEIR RELATIVES

According to survey, 65 percent of dentists point to the increase in the number of dentists in Turkey as the most important cause of rising unemployment in the profession. 78 percent of dentists also state that the state should receive dental services within the scope of SSI from private practice, outpatient clinics and centers. The research also revealed that dentists experience many negative emotions during the pandemic, such as fear of losing their health, anxiety about carrying infections to their relatives and patients, and social phobia.

REVENUE DOWN 67 PER CENT DURING PANDEMIC

91 percent of IDO members said, “I’ve had anxiety about carrying illness to my family or aides.” 77 percent of survey participants experienced a fear of losing their health, while 7 out of every 10 participants experienced anxiety about exposing their patients to cross-infection during the pandemic. The percentage of dentists who said their income had decreased during this process was 67 percent. 40 percent of Ido member dentists also stated that their social phobia occurred during the pandemic.

Evaluating the results of the survey, President of Istanbul Chamber of Dentists, said: “especially our colleagues working in filiation have experienced the pandemic process in a very burning way and continue to live. But beyond that, Turkish dentistry is one of the most risky branches in the health professional group due to the close working conditions with the patient,” he said.

ABOUT 34 THOUSAND STUDENTS ARE STUDYING

Each year, approximately 9 thousand students enrolled in the faculties of Dentistry, indicated, “the board of higher education, professional organisations, without consulting the Faculty of Dentistry opened without considering the potential in the field of health conditions and, in this area, unemployment, unemployment especially among young dentists other than it doesn’t work. From 1908-2002, there were 19 faculties in this field in Turkey. Between 2003-2009, 10 more faculties were added to these, increasing to 29. In 2009-2021, this number was increased from 29-102. Currently, about 34 thousand students are studying in dentistry faculties throughout Turkey. Every year in our country, close to the total number of members of the Istanbul Dental chamber, that is, about 9 thousand young people are enrolled in these departments. It is therefore extremely natural that 93 per cent of young graduates are concerned about the future”.

YÖK MUST STOP OPENING FACULTIES UNPLANNED

Manpower Planning should be done in Higher Education Institute, YÖK should stop opening a faculty of Dentistry unplanned. A change in policy should also be made to reduce the future concern of all dentists and facilitate public access to qualified oral and dental health services. For this purpose, first of all, the state should pave the way for our citizens to receive oral and Turkish dental health services from private practice, outpatient clinics and centers within the scope of SSI. The Republic of Turkey government tax, VAT sales invoice rate on the health services in Turkey should also be reduced.”
