FIRST INFORMATION ABOUT OMICRON

According to the data obtained so far on Omicron, the latest variant of COVID-19; the virus is transmitted much faster, does not cause significant loss of taste and smell, the disease proceeds milder. It is too early to say anything clearly yet, says Turkey Medicals hospital member and Turkish Pulmonologist Doctor, “Pay attention to the mask, distance, hygiene rules. Do not forget to get vaccinated,” he says.

WHY IS THE CORONAVIRUS ON THE RISE IN WINTER?

Winter months are the months when we spend most of our time indoors. For this reason, all respiratory diseases such as influenza, colds, including the coronavirus, increase during the winter months. As of yesterday (December 6), the number of cases in the whole world exceeded 263 million, and the number of those who lost their lives exceeded 5 million 232 thousand. According to the official data of the Ministry of Health in Turkey, the total number of cases exceeded 8 million 700 thousand, and the number of deaths exceeded 76 thousand. All scientific studies conducted so far on COVID-19 show that vaccines reduce the severity of COVID-19, hospitalization, and deaths. By this time, 7 billion 700 thousand doses of the vaccine had been administered all over the world and no serious side effects had occurred. Therefore, there is no scientific data that would require fear of vaccination. We should take advantage of the possibility of vaccination to protect ourselves from the serious dangers of the disease, including death.

.
HOW TO DISTINGUISH CORONA FROM INCREASED GRIP AND COLD IN WINTER?

The most common complaints of COVID-19 disease are fever, dry cough, fatigue and shortness of breath. But  muscle can also be malaise in the body, weakness in the muscles, diarrhea, muscle, throat, head and joint pain. In some studies, loss of sense of smell and taste, visual disturbances were also reported. Sneezing, nasal congestion, or runny nose are more common and at the forefront of colds. Sometimes these complaints can be confused with the symptoms of coronavirus. But fever is not a complaint that we expect, especially with seasonal colds (allergic rhinitis). The symptoms of the flu such as fever, headache, weakness are similar to COVID-19. Loss of taste and smell is more common in COVID-19, while nasal congestion is more prominent in flu. COVID-19 can be overcome with mild complaints in most people. On average, one in 5 people has no complaints about the disease.

.
ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF THE OMICRON VARIANT MORE DIFFERENT?

Our information about Omicron, which was detected in South Africa on November 26, 2021 and has 32 mutations, is very limited. There are data that it is more contagious than the Delta variant. As for the symptoms… In the cases reported so far, symptoms similar to other coronavirus variants have been detected. There is even information that Omicron is watching lighter. We can say that the leading symptoms are fever, cough and shortness of breath. So far, no significant loss of taste and smell has been reported in some people diagnosed with Omicron. But it’s too early to say anything for sure. Looking at the pandemic process, it is very clear that Omicron will not be the last variant we encounter. For this reason, Turkey also needs to take a more active role in the process. As for the variants, regional risk maps should be drawn up, gene sequences belonging to the virus should be studied in Turkey, and a Genome Consortium should be established in us, as in other countries.

.
PREFER PLACES THAT REQUIRE A HEPP CODE

Coronaviruses are viruses that mutate quite often. Therefore, in addition to being vaccinated, always and necessarily follow the methods of personal protection. Do not neglect the mask, pay attention to the distance of at least 2 meters and the rules of hygiene. Be sure to get vaccinated. Make sure that the HPP code is checked in confined spaces. Do not go indoors or shorten your stay unless you have to. Use high-protective masks (N95-FFP2) on public transport and in large crowds.

.
CHILDREN ARE INFECTED LESS OFTEN

Children are less affected by the coronavirus than adults, they are infected less often. Severe illness and deaths are also less common in children. Especially children under the age of 10-12 are infected with the infection 50-90 percent less often than adults.

.
UNVACCINATED PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE A PCR TEST EVEN IF THEIR NOSE IS DOWN

The winter season and indoor environments increase the susceptibility to all viral infections. As of the period, the frequency of flu and flu viruses has also increased. These viruses can cause symptoms similar to COVID-19 disease. Especially when unvaccinated people experience symptoms such as runny nose, sore throat, cough, they should have a PCR test in Turkey. These people should be treated as COVID-19 unless proven otherwise.
