ABOUT TENNIS ELBOW
1- What is Tennis Elbow?
Our elbow joint consists of 3 bones and has 3 protrusions when viewed from the outside. The outermost part is the lateral epicondyle. It is a disorder that causes pain in the arm and elbows, caused by damage to the muscles that provide movement of our fingers by passing through our wrist, or due to too much use of the arm with similar movements.
2- Who Has Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)?
Because it is commonly seen in racquet-using athletes, it has been defined as tennis elbow, it usually appears in the 30-55 age group, but it is also seen in people of an earlier age who do heavy work with hands with compulsive and repetitive movements. Such as housewives, plumbers, dyers, hand weavers, etc. The disease manifests itself with an elbow pain that starts gradually and progresses over time. Because the hands are used too much, this discomfort does not go away on its own, it is difficult to recover.
3- What are the Symptoms of Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)?
Loss of strength in the arm, pain in the arm and elbow, difficulty grasping – holding and lifting something.
4- Treatment of Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)
For tennis elbow (lateral Epicondylitis), first of all, resting and ice application, anti-inflammatory application is the first stage. If you are an athlete, you need to take a break from sports, and cortisone is applied at the second stage. If adequate improvement is not achieved, PRP treatment is tried. If the result is not obtained in this way, surgery will be the solution.
5- Treatment of Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis) with PRP
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is an application that provides extremely successful results in the treatment of musculoskeletal diseases, repair of tissue and cartilage damage. The 10 cc blood taken from the patient is centrifuged together with the PRP tube for 15 minutes. During the centrifuge, the red and unnecessary part of the blood collapses to the bottom of the PRP tube, while growth factors, cytokines are concentrated in the upper part of the tube. These platelets are taken through the injector and injected into the elbow joint of the patient. PRP treatment is not a pain-relieving procedure, but a therapeutic one. 15 Minutes after the procedure, cytokines become active and begin to repair the damage to the elbow. It happens in the first days that you start to feel the effects of PRP gradually, you feel that you are starting to recover after an average of 1 week, and its full effect will be after a period of 1 month. Although the normal process works in this way, the amount of injury to the elbow in the person where the procedure is performed, that is, the condition of the damage, the importance it gives to arm health and age are the most important factors in the success of the treatment.
