CONVERSION DISORDER

Conversion disorder (CD) is a psychiatric disorder that is frequently encountered in children and adolescents. In CD, symptoms such as fainting, convulsions, false seizures, inability to walk, speech, weakness, blindness, hearing loss, which cannot be explained by a neurological or medical condition, are observed. It can be said that these symptoms are due to psychological reasons, are not revealed consciously and planned by the patient, and mental problems turn into physical symptoms.

The occurrence of CD may be related to communication problems and conflicts in a family and friend environment, school failure, poor family relationships, unemployment and economic problems in the family, exposure to emotional and physical abuse, attachment problems, inability to express emotions verbally, poor ability to cope with problems encountered, a family with protective anxiety, a child’s constant physical illness, someone with a mental or physical illness in the family.

1- In general, the incidence rate in children and adolescents is 2-3%.

The diagnosis of CD is made when, as a result of detailed examination and necessary examinations, it is concluded that the symptom is not related to a neurological and medical condition.

2- The recovery rate with treatment in children and adolescents is 70-80%.

In the follow-up of CD; informing the individual and the family about the disorder, changing family attitudes that trigger or cause the problem to occur, individual psychotherapy using cognitive behavioral therapy techniques, solving problems that create stress and strain and improving the ability to cope with problems, increasing emotional awareness, improving emotion management skills, improving communication skills, social skills training, relaxation exercises, treatments for depression and anxiety that often accompany it are applied.

If CD is not treated, there may be a negative impact on mental, social and academic functions, a decrease in course achievement, dropout, introversion, serious loss of time and money, the occurrence of additional mental disorders and an increase in the severity and continuity of the disease due to family’s wrong attitudes.

I wish you all a healthy, happy and peaceful day…
