REGULAR DAILY WATER INTAKE HELPS KIDNEY HEALTH

Turkey Medicals member and Nephrology specialist Doctor in Antalya Medical Park Hospital explained the importance of water from the point of view of the kidneys as follows: “thirst develops due to insufficient intake or loss of water, which makes up most of our body. The main conditions that cause dehydration are diseases such as diarrhea, vomiting, sweating, and diabetes, which leads to a large amount of urination. Water allows waste substances in our body to be excreted in the form of urine. Thanks to water, nutrients in the veins are transported to the kidneys and other organs to feed our kidneys. When thirst develops, failures in the nutrition of the organs begin to appear. A feeling of weakness occurs when moderate thirst develops. If there is a serious thirst, kidney failure in this case can lead to consequences ranging from nausea to vomiting and coma. For this reason, it is necessary to increase fluid consumption, especially before and after sports activities, in hot and humid weather and in cases of fluid loss, such as diarrhea.

THIRST CAN CAUSE KIDNEY STONES AND URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS
“Moderate thirst causes the accumulation of proteins such as myoglobin, which is released as a result of the melting of toxic waste substances and muscles in the body,” was said, noting that the long-term low water consumption leads to permanent kidney damage. In particular, myoglobin is a toxic protein that causes damage to the kidneys and disrupts the functioning of the kidneys. Thirst can also lead to kidney stones and urinary tract infections. If these diseases are not treated quickly, they can cause kidney failure. Adequate water consumption prevents crystals from merging to form stones; at the same time, it increases the effectiveness of antibiotics and increases the amount of urine, allowing bacteria to be excreted through the urine,” he said.

TO SEE IF YOU’RE CONSUMING ENOUGH FLUIDS
There are various ways to understand whether we consume enough liquid, said: ’if your urine is dark yellow, this means that you consume a small amount of water. But if your urine color is close to orange or red, or there is no change in the color of your urine due to increased water consumption, in this case you should consult a doctor and take a urine test. Everyone’s water needs are different. Water needs vary according to weather conditions, movement and accompanying diseases. For example, in diseases such as heart failure or cirrhosis, patients are advised to restrict fluids. If you do not have any accompanying diseases, increasing your water consumption so that your urine color is clear gives you a healthy life,’ he said.
