BEWARE OF ‘TOURIST DIARRHEA’
This type of diarrhea can occur on a trip or after returning from a trip. According to statistical data, it is known that about 1 billion people travel around the world every year. While these trips should be fun and enjoyable, especially if they are for a holiday, they can often bring health problems.
One of the diseases that can occur in connection with travel is ‘tourist diarrhea’. This type of diarrhea can occur during the trip or within 10 days after returning from the trip. The incidence rate in travelers to underdeveloped countries is 20-65 percent, while tourist diarrhea can develop in the first 2 weeks.
Turkey Medicals member and Adana hospital Infectious Diseases Specialist Dr. stated that tourist diarrhea is a type of diarrhea caused by microorganisms in food and beverages consumed in the region being traveled. Specialist explains that this diarrhea, which comes with abdominal pain, frequent cramps, gas, nausea, vomiting, frequent defecation and a constant feeling of tightness, can sometimes be effective throughout the entire holiday. Dr. “Tourist diarrhea is a type of diarrhea that does not cause fever and bloody diarrhea. It’s more of a bacterial disease. Can take a long time. We do not recommend antibacterial therapy to prevent diarrhea. In cases where it is serious and long-term, it is necessary to consult a doctor,” he said.
Selectivity is important in nutrition
Emphasizing that Turkey is one of the high-risk regions for tourist diarrhea, such as Africa, Asia and the Middle East countries, Specialist Dr. noted that the risk ratio in question is significantly lower in the United States and European countries. In order to protect against tourist diarrhea, it is necessary to be selective in the food and drinks consumed, says Specialist Dr. who listed the following as a precaution:
“We should not consume water whose source is unclear or whose source we do not know. We should especially avoid iced drinks. It is useful to stay away from salad type foods that we do not know how and under what conditions they are produced during the travel. We should avoid consuming products that deteriorate quickly, especially ice cream. We should give preference to those whose fruits are peeled and shelled. By the way, we must definitely pay attention to more hygiene of hands, as well as food and drinks. We must have liquid soap and alcoholic disinfectants during the trip. In case of diarrhea, it is necessary to take enough liquid.”
