PRECAUTIONS THAT CAN BE TAKEN AGAINST THE PROBLEM OF DIARRHEA IN INFANTS

In infants, diarrhea, gastroenteritis often, drugs, changes in the mother’s diet breastfed babies, babies who are starting complementary feeding is a common condition and can occur for reasons such as adjusting to new foods. Mild diarrhea can be easily cured with proper treatment at home.

Turkey Medicals member and Expert Dietitian in Istanbul hospital gave information about the subject…

Critical point: liquid supplementation

One of the most important points in infant diarrhea is the replacement of fluid lost with feces. In case of diarrhea, 50-100 ml of liquid should be added to infants under 2 years of age after each watery defecation, and 100-200 ml of liquid should be added to infants over 2 years of age after each watery defecation. In order to prevent loss of appetite as a result of filling the stomach volume with water, babies who are breastfed should be breastfed first and then liquid supplements should be made.

Medication: breast milk

Breast milk strengthens the immune system, helping to eliminate diarrhea and reducing the risk of developing dehydration, so breast milk should be continued with the same frequency in infants who receive breast milk. In infants fed with the formula, the food should be prepared in the same way without extra dilution and continue to be given with the same frequency.

Choose between food nutrients correctly.

If the baby is taking between food, the nutrients should be selected in a way that relieves diarrhea. It is necessary to avoid foods that can increase diarrhea, such as pears, dried apricots, peaches, prunes, figs, grapes, zucchini, beets. Raw fruits and vegetables because they are difficult to digest, whole grains because they have a high pulp content, and juices and sugary foods should not be given because they increase the osmotic load, and excessive fatty foods, fried foods should be avoided. However, foods such as carrots, potatoes, rice, and bananas can alleviate diarrhea by increasing the consistency of feces; homemade yogurts, commercial yogurts with probiotic supplements, and kefir can increase the response to treatment.

Follow the rule of 3 days.

Mild diarrhea may develop as a result of the adaptation of the digestive system in infants who are just starting to eat solid food, but severe diarrhea may be an indication of an allergic condition. Therefore, the rule of 3 days should be observed so that allergy control can be carried out. Each new food should be added one by one and between intervals of 3-4 days. If no allergic reactions have developed between, a new additional nutrient can be started with the ones that have been tried.

Probiotic support may be required for antibiotic use

Antibiotics are able to kill not only harmful bacteria, but also beneficial bacteria, disrupting the normal intestinal flora. Therefore, diarrhea may develop in infants taking antibiotics. During periods when antibiotics are used, support should be obtained from foods such as yogurt with probiotics, kefir. Attention! In case of infant diarrhea, treatment at home is sufficient if watery defecation occurs no more than 3-4 times a day and there are no signs of dehydration. But if the number of stools is 4-10 times a day or more, and there are signs of dehydration, such as dry mouth, dry skin, refusal of nutrition, crying without tears, constant drowsiness, a doctor in Turkey should definitely be consulted.
