THE PLACE OF INTRA-KNEE INJECTION TREATMENT IN CALCIFICATION DISEASE
In gonarthrosis, various medications can be given into the knee. It is often not a painful application when done properly. Although there is no need to perform local anesthesia before the injection, we perform the numbing process with a cooling spray just before the injection to the place where we inserted the needle. A feeling of fullness and aching may occur in the joint within a few days after the injection, this condition is normal and temporary.
Substances that can be given by injection into the knee are generally Corticosteroids (cortisone) and Hyaluronic Acid, also called “cartilage protective agent”.
Hyaluronic acid injections are also divided into “low molecular weight” and “high molecular weight” among themselves. Decongestant hyaluronic acid injections are also divided into “low molecular weight” and “high molecular weight”. Due to the fact that it is effective both for a longer time and gives more effective results in the disease, the high molecular weight one has been used more widely in recent years.
In addition to these, PRP injection has also been tried for some time in the world as a treatment for arthritis, but it has lost its validity in treatment because the expected good results could not be obtained.

HOW DOES HYALURONIC ACID WORK?
It helps to reduce the pain caused by calcification for a certain period of time and thus can improve the patient’s quality of life. Hyaluronic acid injection therapy is not a powerful method that will eliminate the option of prosthetic surgery, but it has an effect that can prolong the process leading to surgery. The main goal is to provide joint lubricity and increase the durability of cartilage by replacing the decreased hyaluronic acid in the joint.
In the latest studies of the American International Orthoarthritis Research Association, the importance of the role of hyaluronic acid made into the joint and at the same time protecting the articular cartilage has been emphasized. Although there is no miraculous treatment at a level that will eliminate the option of knee replacement surgery, it constitutes an important step in the treatment of arthritis.
As a matter of fact, in addition to its lubricating and shock absorbing effect on the joint, Hyaluronic Acid also works by affecting the activity of prostaglandin and cytokines, which increase inflammation in the joint.
Corticosteroids, on the other hand, have long been used in the treatment of arthritis with their pain-relieving and inflammation-reducing effects. However, their duration of action is short and they should be used in repeated doses. It is more suitable to be used for the initial stages of calcification disease.
