DO NOT DARKEN YOUR LIFE WHEN WHITENING YOUR TEETH AT HOME

Especially with the influence of social media, in recent years, everyone has started to demand whiter, more “perfect” smiles. Teeth whitening has now become one of the most frequently requested dental treatments. Unfortunately, many people, instead of going to the doctor, try to whiten their teeth in their own way at home. This can have very harmful consequences for oral health.

Turkey Medicals hospital member and the best dentist in Antalya gave the following information about the options offered for home teeth whitening and their harm, which can cause irreversible damage:

.
BAKING SODA DESTROYS TOOTH ENAMEL

“In addition to cleaning carpets and removing odors, soda and bicarbonate are also used as a leavening agent and for beauty treatments at home. Baking soda, most often mixed with water, is safe for whitening teeth, but when doing this, you should be extremely gentle and not use it often. The way to remove stains from the tooth is to etch surface stains, but this method causes a problem such as eliminating tooth enamel when used too often or applied too strongly. That’s why you should never apply baking soda directly to your teeth.

.
BANANA PEEL, STRAWBERRIES, TURMERIC

It is claimed that the inside of the banana peel provides a quick and easy shine when rubbed directly into the teeth. The theory of whitening banana peel teeth is based on the logic that the peel has a high content of potassium and magnesium and adheres to the teeth. But there is no evidence that this is effective. Strawberry is also receiving likes on Instagram and Facebook, Twitter social media as a so-called whitening agent. The claim that the strawberry whitens the teeth is that it will remove stains due to the acidity of the fruit, which is true. But acid does this by eroding the enamel that protects your teeth, so this method is also a bad choice. Different whitening applications such as turmeric, coconut, lemon and walnut shells are also tried and recommended. But it should be remembered that such substances do not have any benefit in whitening teeth, even if they have an abrasive effect.

.
HYDROGEN PEROXIDE

It is a colorless liquid chemical that is usually used as a disinfectant and bleach. Although it is hard to believe, hydrogen peroxide is used by some people by rubbing it into their teeth for whitening purposes. The use of hydrogen peroxide is a very serious condition, and the high concentrations you will use can be very bad for your gums. A low concentration of hydrogen peroxide is safer when used as a mouthwash or inside toothpaste. But you should remember that this will still not have much effect on teeth whitening.

.
WHAT ARE THE IRREVERSIBLE DAMAGES?

Other methods that look like chemicals or natural can cause problems such as wear on the surface of the tooth, advanced tooth and gum sensitivity. Your teeth may lose their vitality and become susceptible to infection. If Hydrogen Peroxide overflows into the gums, the living cells here may die, and their blood supply may be disrupted and gum recession may occur. It can also burn when it comes into contact with soft tissues such as gums, tongue or lips. If whitening procedures are performed by hearsay and more than necessary, your teeth may become darker than their old color in the long run.

.
THE METHOD OF LASER TEETH WHITENING

The laser teeth whitening method applied in the clinical setting is performed by a specialist physician. This procedure, which is performed by activating the whitening gel applied to the teeth with the help of UV light or laser, takes about an hour on average. There is no harm in whitening done under the supervision of a dentist. The methods applied in clinics are approved after years of research studies. Although it varies from person to person, if it is not exposed to chromogens such as coffee, red wine, cigarette smoke, whitened teeth can generally maintain their whiteness for up to a year.

.
WHY DO OUR TEETH TURN YELLOW?

The causes of tooth discoloration can be divided into two main groups: internal and external discoloration. Internal staining, sometimes also called internal staining, can be attributed to factors such as genetics, age (from enamel abrasion that releases more yellow dentin over time), antibiotics, high levels of fluoride, and developmental disorders, and can begin even before the tooth comes out. In the periods after the tooth starts to come out, some dental restorations can cause staining of the tooth. This condition, also sometimes called external coloration, is largely caused by environmental factors such as pigments in cigarettes, drinks, and foods, antibiotics, and metals such as iron or copper.

Colored compounds obtained from these sources are adsorbed on the acquired dental pellicle or directly on the surface of the tooth, resulting in the formation of a stain.”
