An orthognathic surgery is necessary when the lower and upper jaws do not fit together completely and/ or when the teeth fit incorrectly with each other in the closed position of the mouth. Orthognathic surgery consists of 2 stages. In orthodontic treatment, irregularities in the teeth are removed, and corrective surgery reconstructs incorrectly positioned jaws. With this combined treatment protocol, the appearance of the face improves, and the teeth regain proper function by reaching the correct closing position.

1- Who Needs Orthognathic Surgery?

People whose teeth do not show proper closure or whose jaw positions are incorrect may benefit from orthognathic surgery. Although the development of the jaws shows a gradual stage, in some cases the development of the lower and upper jaw may be at different speeds. As a result, a person’s chewing function, speech, oral health and facial shape are affected. Jaw injuries and birth defects also affect the closing position of the jaws. Orthodontic treatment alone only corrects the position of the teeth. However, if it is desired to change the position of the jaws, orthognathic surgery will definitely be required.

The conditions that should be evaluated in the patient who is scheduled for orthognathic surgery in Turkey hospital centers are indicated below.

– Difficulties in chewing, biting and swallowing functions,

– Speech problems,

– Chronic jaw and jaw joint pain,

– In the closed position of the jaw, the teeth do not overlap each other in the front,

– The presence of a protruding jaw,

– Respiratory problems.

Some of these may exist at birth, as well as hereditary (genetic) or environmental factors, or may be seen as acquired problems in the postpartum period due to facial trauma. Before any treatment is initiated, the patient’s head X-rays will be examined and a detailed consultation will be held. During the pre-treatment consultation process, the patient should share all the questions about his treatment with his physicians. Together with patient’s physicians (Istanbul dentist, orthodontist and plastic surgeon), who are informed in detail about the treatment, they will decide on how to direct the treatment.

2- Technology and Orthognathic Surgery

Your plastic surgeon will show you how to perform your surgical treatment using modern techniques and three-dimensional models. By using comparative head radiographs and other imaging methods, he will make a visual presentation to you about how your teeth will close and your facial expression will be renewed after the operation, and he will ensure that our new appearance will be formed in your head. Thus, it will help you understand the surgical procedure process, this long treatment protocol and the benefits you will get from this treatment.

Turkey Medicals Co-ordinator, “If you are a candidate for corrective maxillofacial surgery, your plastic surgeon will work in close cooperation with your dentist and orthodontist during your treatment process. After orthognathic surgery, your teeth and jaw will be moved to their new position, resulting in a more impressive, functional and healthy dental-facial union.”
