Tips on the healing process after plastic surgery
Plastic surgery is exciting for most patients and perhaps a “turning point” because the goal of almost everyone is to increase self-esteem, refresh self-confidence. Naturally, many patients want to speed up the healing process and want to enjoy these changes as soon as possible and return to their normal daily activities and habits immediately.
Please remember, every patient and every procedure is different from each other, and the recovery times also differ from each other. However, I would like to give you the good news, if you carefully follow your surgeon’s postoperative instructions, you can manage to have a significant positive impact on your recovery process. Today, many surgeons like me adapt the healing process according to the personal needs of the patient, depending on the health status of their patients, the procedure they perform and, along with all this, the patient’s reactions to the operation.
Here are the most effective tips that every plastic surgery patient can follow to speed up recovery:
The nail does not remove the nail
Pain, bruising and swelling, edema are part of the natural healing process of your body, and this experience that you will experience after surgery is normal. Many patients try to withstand or ignore the pain, but it is important to take the painkillers we prescribe. Don’t let the pain catch up with you; remember that you are only doing yourself a disservice by prolonging your healing process. In surgery, I would like to remind you that a common side effect of these drugs is constipation. To counteract this, it is important to move often and consume plenty of fluids.
Walking is important
During the first 48 hours after surgery, you will need a lot of rest; however, please listen to the instructions and walk as far as allowed. Moving helps your body heal and can also reduce pain levels.
You may not feel well, but you have to stand up to get your blood flowing. Even walking around your house for a few minutes is better than doing nothing. You can set a timer to remind you to get up and move every hour.
Take a break from the gym
Yes, it is important to move, however, I am not talking about strenuous exercises such as running or lifting weights. Many patients are impatient to return to their normal exercise routines, but it is important to avoid demanding exercises for several weeks after surgery to speed up recovery times.
This type of heavy exercise can increase bruising, bleeding and inflammation. Patients who enter vigorous training regimens immediately after surgery may experience serious complications, such as reopening the incision. Even if you think you’re ready to get back to the gym, be sure to consult your doctor before resuming preoperative activity levels.
Have realistic expectations
Remember that the healing process is only a certain period of time. After any surgery, you will look and feel worse (before recovery). Bruising and swelling occur in almost all types of plastic surgery procedures. You won’t see the full effect of your results for a few days or longer. Don’t panic, stress can affect your body’s natural recovery time.
Depending on which procedure you have, your recovery time may vary from a few days to a few weeks. Plan how your recovery time after surgery will affect your work, family responsibilities, and social schedule. Also, have a family member or friend take care of you for 48 to 72 hours after the surgery. Even if you believe that you can resume your normal routines immediately, having someone there to help will give you peace of mind and help you focus on your recovery. If there is no one to meet your postoperative needs, you can ask the hospital staff for help in this regard.
Do not smoke
As a general rule, patients who smoke should quit smoking at least eight weeks before the plastic surgery procedure is performed. When the surgery is over, it does not mean that you can start again. Because it affects your circulation, smoking significantly delays the healing process and can cause serious complications during recovery.
Ice bags or corset clothes
If you have undergone any facial surgery, including a facelift, eyelid aesthetics and rhinoplasty, it is important to apply ice to minimize swelling. Even if you have bandages covering the surgical site, a cold compress may be required periodically.
Some surgical procedures, such as tummy tucks, liposuction, breast aesthetics, may require you to wear a corset for several weeks. Do not underestimate the importance of these clothes to help your body control the formation of swelling and decapitation. They also help body contouring by preventing wrinkling of the skin and increasing skin retraction. The pressure of the corset clothes can make the scars softer, flatter and less visible.
Each Patient Requires Different Care
Remember that the recovery process after plastic surgery is different from patient to patient and, most importantly, according to the type of procedures you choose.
Taking prescription medications at certain times, regular walks, how to take care of your surgical incisions to reduce scarring will be explained to you by your doctor. It is much more valuable to ensure that your body heals properly, please do not rush through the healing process.
