WHY ARE THERE BUMPS ON THE TONGUE?

Associate Professor, Head of the ENT Department and Turkey Medicals member, gave information about tongue swellings, saying that sometimes these swellings can be a harbinger of a tumor, noting that it is important to take into account and treat them correctly.

The tongue is an organ in our mouth, the main structure of which consists entirely of muscle. Since it is exposed to many stimuli such as hot, cold, bitter, sweet during the day, it can turn into different colors and shapes. But these changes can also sometimes be due to annoying stops. The two main causes that cause abnormal swelling of the tongue are allergies and tumors. Allergic swellings are usually observed in children and young people when a different substance (medication, food, etc.b.) it develops within minutes or hours after it is taken, and swelling also occurs on the small lips and palate, which we call the uvula, along with the tongue. Swelling of the tongue due to a tumor, on the other hand, usually occurs in older people, gradually growing over a long period of months.

It is very important for us how soon the swelling develops. Allergy-related swelling occurs in a very short time, while tumors-related swelling occurs for a longer time. We are also investigating the cause that causes allergies in allergic swellings. This can sometimes be a medicine, while sometimes it can even be a nut or a candy.

.
WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND TO PATIENTS WHO HAVE NOTICED SWELLING ON THE TONGUE?

First of all, I would like to remind you that not every swelling is a disease. Let’s not forget that swelling, especially on the back of the tongue, which we call the root of the tongue, usually occurs as a result of the growth of taste buds. These taste buds can grow after spicy, sour or very spicy dishes. Some of our patients are hurriedly applying for a tumor on the back of my tongue. But these are due to the growth of taste buds.

If the swelling is developing rapidly, they should urgently contact a medical institution. Because sometimes allergies can cause severe respiratory distress and even death. If the tumor is associated with swelling, it should first be determined that the tumor is benign or malignant. Treatment is planned according to the condition and type of tumor.
