CHIEF PHYSICIAN SPOKE ABOUT COLLECTED SUNSCREENS

After detecting the carcinogenic substance ‘benzene’ in sunscreens produced by Johnson & Johnson, one of the American pharmaceutical giants, some of which are also sold in Turkey, the company decided to collect these products. Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty Hospital Chief Physician Assoc. Dr. said that those who use this cream should not panic, benzene should be exposed to this substance for decades to create cancer.

U.S. pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson, which was fined $ 2.1 billion in recent months over the detection of carcinogenic substances in baby powders, has now announced that it has decided to collect sunscreens. Aveeno Protect, Refresh aerosol sunscreen, Beach Defense aerosol under Neutrogena brand, CoolDry Sport aerosol, Invisible Daily Defense aerosol and UltraSheer aerosol sunscreens, although low levels of benzene, were detected.

Some of these products are also sold in Turkey. Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa, Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty Hospital Chief Physician and dermatology department lecturer Assoc. Dr. said, ” solar products belonging to some brands of Johnson & Johnson, which are also available in our country, were collected from the market. The reason was that a substance known to be a carcinogen called benzene was detected in these products. An independent research company detected benzene in these solar products, and therefore these products were withdrawn from the market. In Normal circumstances, benzene should not actually be present in sunscreens. But somehow it is stated that this substance may have been mixed during the production phase,” he said.

NO CANCER USING A BOX, NO NEED TO PANIC

Doctor in Turkey said, ” of course, exposure to it for a long time can trigger the development of cancer. Especially because it attacks blood cells, it can facilitate the emergence of a number of leukemia-style cancers. That’s why it’s a carcinogenic substance. The International Cancer Association, a subsidiary of who, has also completely banned its use. But unfortunately, when it was detected in the products, it was necessary to withdraw the products from the market. People who have used this cream in a box or in the last few months should not worry that I will have cancer. Because in order for such substances to cause cancer, it takes decades of exposure. Those who use these products, even if accidentally, certainly do not panic, if they have them, be sure to throw them away and continue to be protected from the sun with other sunscreens,” he said.

.
WE DEFINITELY HAVE TO USE SUNSCREEN

Assoc, who noted that there are two types of sunscreen, and one of them creates a physical protection, and the other creates a property to protect against the harmful effects of the sun’s rays by a chemical reaction under the skin. Dr. “physical sunscreens in the preservatives that we call, which is more preferred in children and children’s products, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, such as there are substances. These work by reflecting incoming sunlight. The second type of sunscreen is actually chemical-based products. In these, there are a number of sunscreens, such as Tinorob-M, Tinorob-S. Their feature is that they absorb sunlight, absorb it and prevent it from passing under the skin. Now we know that the sun is not the friend we used to know. 90 percent of skin cancers are caused by sunlight. In the last 50 years, the incidence of skin cancer has increased 10-fold, and we have recently started to see more types of skin cancer that are fatal. So we have to protect ourselves from the sun. The important thing here is that just because an unwanted substance has been detected in a solar product, it is not true to say that sunscreens are bad. Especially those who have to be protected from The Sun, who are at risk of skin cancer in their family or themselves, especially those who have Type 1 skin color, colored eyes, red hair, light skin color, are more likely to develop skin cancer. These people need to be very well protected from the sun,” he said.

.
BENZENE, PARABEN, SLS, OXYBENZONE, OCTOTRYLENE THESE ARE PROHIBITED SUBSTANCES

“Each brand has separate sunscreens for babies and children. There are no chemicals in them. There are a number of substances in the style of zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, which we call just physical preservatives. These are already safe sunscreens. These can be easily used. But because these creams leave a layer like white lime when applied, adults may not want to use that kind of sunscreen. The presence of substances such as paraben or SLS in sunscreens is currently prohibited. There are a number of carcinogenic substances such as benzene, oxybenzone, octotrylene. These have also been banned by the WHO and the Department of Health. For this reason, the main important thing in sunscreens is to use it as a protection factor.”

.
PROTECTION FACTOR THAT MATTERS, IT DOESN’T MATTER IF IT’S MILK, CREAM OR LOTION

“Different factors on sunscreens are written, 15, 30, 50, etc. Our people think that when they go from a factor of 15 to 30, they will be twice as protected. Not really, 15-factor sunscreen protects 95 percent. 30-factor sunscreen protects 97 percent. 50 factor sunscreen protects 99 percent. So when you go from 15 to 50, the protection rate doesn’t increase three-fold, it only increases by 4 percent. Therefore also use a sunscreen of factor 15 and above, we are sufficient from the point of view of Dermatologists. Sunscreens protect from the sun for an average of three to four hours, if the water does not touch, if the shower is not taken, etc., it should be rubbed again after 3-4 hours. And there are different forms of these products. In terms of these, the criterion of protection determines the factor. It’s got lotion, it’s got milk, it’s got cream, it’s got water-based cream, it’s got oil-based cream, etc. The main reason for this is not their preservatives, but because they are produced according to different skin types. So there’s dry skin, there’s mixed skin, there’s oily skin. Companies also produce products in different forms for different skin types. As a water-based cream or lotion or milk on oily skin, oily cream on dry skin will be used. Another feature is their ease of use, of course. But whatever factor is on it, it protects as much. So if it says 15, it’s 95 percent protective.”
