What is Septoplasty?

Greetings Dear Readers,

This week I would like to give you information about the topic of ‘Septoplasty’ related to the nose. I am sure that those of you who have breathing or cartilage curvature problems will decipher this article with interest.

As you know, nasal congestion can cause difficulty in daily life and a decrease in sleep quality. Curvatures of the middle compartment of the nose, consisting of cartilage in the front and bone in the back, are the most important cause of nasal congestion.

This problem, which we call septum deviation, can also lead to sinusitis, nosebleeds and sometimes headaches.

Septoplasty Is A Surgical Procedure

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to eliminate congenital or subsequent curvature of the cartilage in the nose. Not every nasal curvature may require surgical procedure. But if this curvature in the nose leads to breathing difficulties, it should definitely be corrected. Thus, the respiratory problem disappears and the quality of life increases.

It has a complex anatomy consisting of septum, cartilage and bone, which has a structure that divides the inner region of the nose into 2 separate parts. From a technical point of view, it is divided into 5 separate regions.

Curvatures found in the anterior regions mainly lead to respiratory problems. The growths that occur in the flesh of the nose, together with the curvatures of the septum, create breathing difficulties. In this case, the treatments should be examined and planned with the details of all the problems.

Swelling and Bruising are Not Experienced

The septoplasty operation performed to correct the curvatures is performed after the age of 17-18, unless it is very necessary. It is applied accompanied by general or local anesthesia. After the surgery, silicone leaves are placed in the nose and these leaves are effortlessly removed after 2-3 days.

After this procedure, swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes do not occur. Patients do not need to rest lying down. They do not feel any pain except for the sensitivity that may occur at the tip of the nose and above the lips.

The main goal during the septoplasty procedure is to ensure that the curtain inside the nose is smooth and to eliminate problems that will prevent air passage.

During the application, it may be possible to use various cartilage fragments taken from the septum in rhinoplasty operations. During cartilage removal through the nose, some areas of the septum are preserved, preventing a loss of resistance.

Why Does the Septum-Induced Nasal Congestion Problem Occur?

Deformity of the septum is one of the most common causes of nasal congestion. The standard septum shape that should be is thin and flat. However, the septum may tilt for various reasons and there may be a deterioration of its shape. This causes breathing problems. ‘Septoplasty surgery’ is of great importance in cases where the shape of the septum deteriorates to such an extent that it leads to nasal congestion.

How is Septoplasty Surgery Performed?

We surgeons apply an incision to one side of the septum through the nose along with anesthesia during surgery. We fix the obstructing part of the septum from the incision we have opened. The operation can be applied in various ways. In some application methods, the section with congestion can be removed. In some methods, the part that makes the blockage is corrected and re-placed. No matter which way the operation is performed, the external appearance of the nose does not change.

What Needs to Be Done After Surgery

After the operation, the patient should be fed with juicy and soft foods. Food intake can be started 3 hours after the operation. Starting from the next day of the operation, the old routine feeding pattern can be returned. There may be very slight pain after surgery. At this stage, the pain can be relieved by taking painkillers given under the supervision of a doctor.

Nasal tampons placed during septoplasty surgery are special silicone tampons. While the cloth and rope used in the old times are removed like tampons, it does not cause problems such as pain or bleeding. Nasal congestion may occur due to nasal wounds, scabs and accumulated discharge in the first 1-2 weeks after surgery. During the recovery period, this congestion will decrease and breathing will become easier over time.

If septoplasty surgery is performed by a reliable and experienced physician, the quality of life increases greatly. Problems caused by the inability to breathe healthily, such as ear congestion, chronic fatigue, poor quality sleep, will also disappear after this operation.

I wish you healthy days…
