SCIENTISTS ANNOUNCE: 28 DIFFERENT VIRUSES HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED

Scientists discovered 28 different viruses, about 15 thousand frozen and never known to humanity until now, in glacial samples obtained from the Tibetan plateau, located in the Tibet Autonomous Region of southwestern China.

A discovery carried out by scientists in the Tibet Autonomous Region in southwest China has attracted attention in the scientific world. Scientists conducting research on glacier samples taken in 2015 from the Guliya Ice cover on the Tibetan plateau, located in the Tibet Autonomous Region, determined the genetic codes of 32 different viruses, 28 of which have been frozen in glaciers for about 15 thousand years and are so far unknown to humanity.

MANY VIRUSES HAVE ACCUMULATED IN THE ICE

“These glaciers gradually formed with dust and gases, and many viruses also accumulated in this ice, ” said, a researcher at the Byrd Center for Polar and Climate Research at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, USA, and who led the study that opened the door to the discovery of viruses. Ice cores contain layers of ice that accumulate each year, trapping those in the atmosphere around them as each layer freezes over. These layers create a timeline of the kind that scientists have used throughout history to understand more about climate change, microbes, viruses and gases,” he said.

The ice cores, on the other hand, were collected as part of a joint interdisciplinary study between the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center and the Tibetan Plateau Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, China. In addition, the study was funded by the US National Science Foundation and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
