WHAT CAUSES NECK HERNIA, THE SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENT

The neck area consists of muscles, 7 cervical vertebrae, discs located between the vertebrae, ligaments, spinal cord, nerves coming out of the spinal cord, membranes surrounding them, veins and skin. The neck region is also responsible for carrying our vitally important skull, and because it is a very mobile region, it can often be subjected to trauma. The discs located between the neck vertebrae act as shock absorbers, which allows the vertebrae to move comfortably over each other, and also helps to absorb the load on the neck area.

Turkey Medicals member and hospital clinic Expert Physiotherapist in Istanbul, who gave information about neck hernia, said:

“In a disease we call a neck hernia, as a result of deconstructing the discs between the vertebrae, the structure inside it protrudes out of the joint cavity, narrowing the spinal canal and putting pressure on the nerves passing through it. When the nerve is under pressure, it cannot properly transmit the muscles it is stimulating, however, according to the magnitude of the pain and pressure, a loss of muscle strength be observed in the muscles.

The diagnosis of a neck hernia can be made by a physical examination performed by a Turkish hospital doctor, a neurological examination, and radiological examinations such as MRI. Let’s never forget that it is much easier and more accurate to protect these structures when they are intact than to try to repair a broken structure in our body. That’s why, especially when working at the desk, we should pay attention to our posture and keep our muscles strong before it occurs.” said.

Causes, symptoms and treatment of neck hernia

Expert Physiotherapist, who gave information about the causes, symptoms and treatment of neck hernia, told the following:

– Causes of neck hernia:

Trauma (such as falls, bumps, traffic accidents, blows received in combat sports),

Vertebrae and discs lose fluid with age, over time, the disk’s resistance to loads decreases,

Incorrect posture and poor use of the spine again disrupt the structure of the disc,

Sudden uncontrolled movements, long-term stay in a fixed position due to working at the desk also become the basis for the deterioration of the structure of the disks,

– Symptoms of a neck hernia:

Pain in the neck and nape area,

Pains that hit the shoulder, arms and shoulder area,

Numbness and tingling that affects the shoulders, arms and fingers,

Loss of muscle strength in the shoulders, arms and fingers,

Loss of feeling in the shoulders, arms and fingers,

Muscle mass in the shoulders, arms and fingers (in very advanced cases),

Conditions such as coughing, sneezing, and straining can increase pain,

These symptoms can be bilateral, as well as unilateral (if the disk shows pressure from the center) (in cases where the disk shows pressure from the right or left),

The area where these symptoms occur may also vary depending on which level of disk in the neck there are problems at that level. For example, a person may only complain of numbness and pain in his fingers, which in this case may suggest a hernia at the lower levels of the neck,

– Treatment of cervical hernia:

Appropriate medications are prescribed by the doctor,

Hot applications can be performed for chronic neck hernias,

Electrotherapy, massage and exercises can be performed from classical physical therapy methods,

Manual therapy is very effective in reducing the load on the disc, especially when the vertebrae in the neck are decoupled.
.

It is very important that muscle exercises prescribed by the physiotherapist are performed regularly to strengthen the muscles of the neck, back and shoulders.
