70 PERCENT OF THOSE WHO TRY IT ONCE BECOME ADDICTED

Especially recently, “narcotic” substances have been tried to be advertised as if they were a normal thing in the content of digital media, Prof. Doctor “Sometimes very bad examples happen. You see it on the screen and on social media. They are trying to show people as if drugs can be used, something standard. However, it is not. 70 percent of those who try the drug once become addicted,” he said.

Dean of University Faculty of Medicine and Head of the Department of Public Health Prof. Dr. made statements on the occasion of the International Day against Drug Use and Trafficking on June 26. He is also a member of the Scientific Board of the Turkish Drug and Drug Addiction Monitoring Center (TUBIM). Prof. Dr. emphasized that recently, especially in the content contained in digital media, drugs have been trying to be advertised as something normal, standard and usable.

Prof. Doctor said that as a result of the research conducted, it was found that 70 percent of those who tried the drug once were addicted. Prof. Doctor also noted that in scientific studies, the history of tobacco and tobacco products and alcohol use in the histories of those who use drugs was also found to be quite high compared to those who use drugs and those who do not use them.

“Looking at the European region, it is possible to say that almost one out of every 4 or 5 young people uses drugs”

Stressing that the fight against drugs in Turkey continues in a serious way, Prof. Doctor “Turkey has a very serious structure in the fight against drugs, especially the Supreme Council for the Fight against Addiction (UNHCR). Also in the struggle with addiction to drugs for about 15 years as a scientist, I can easily tell by comparing it with the examples in the world.

As you know, when we look at drugs specifically, drug use in the world is high. In fact, looking at the European region, it is possible to say that almost one out of every 4 or 5 young people uses drugs. Of course, the figures in our country are not so high. In the most recent studies conducted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, between 2.7 and 3.1 percent of people who have tried to use drugs at least once are known to be in our society,” he said.

“We see that the most important thing to do is to prevent the start of drugs, that is, to fight demand”

Stressing that the fight against drugs is a very important issue, Prof. Dr. struggle supply, demand, and encouragement is possible with fighting together at the point of stressing that, “our research also viewed us, especially for drugs continues to 70 percent of those who tried it once in Turkey, considering that the most important thing to be done; as it is now on drugs start to prevent that is, we see that the demand is struggling with. Besides, there is also a struggle with supply. Of course, this is the subject of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Our police, gendarmerie and coast guard are struggling with this very seriously,” he said.

In particular, recently, efforts have been made to normalize the use of drugs in some content contained in digital media, Prof. Dr. said, “Sometimes very bad examples happen. You see it on the screen and on social media. They are trying to show people as if drugs can be used, something standard. However, it is not. 70 percent of those who try the drug once become addicted. As it is already the case all over the world in Turkey, the most drug use comes along with cannabis,” he explained.

“Addiction is a process that has been laid in between the 6-18 age range, which we call more like a full adolescent”

Stating that the addiction process is mostly based on adolescence, Prof. Dr. emphasized that parents should be a little more careful, especially during this period, “Addiction is a process that has been laid in the December6-18 age range, which we call full adolescent. Of course, it’s hard to say that people here start directly with drugs. Sometimes people don’t start with drugs. Again, I would like to share the results of Turkish drug research with you. For example, if one of the 3 or 5 closest friends around the child is using drugs, the child also has an increased risk. If someone in the family uses drugs or someone from the household they live with in the house, for example, a university student, and one of their friends at home uses it, works, and one of their friends there uses it, it is possible to say that the risk increases. So we can say that the environment in particular has a very negative impact on these processes,”he said.

“Prior history of alcohol use or high history of tobacco and tobacco product use”

In the light of the scientific research conducted, a history of tobacco and alcohol use was also found in people with drug use and addiction, said Prof. Dr. “Looking at the histories of drug users, it has been proven today that using products such as cigarettes, wrap cigarettes, cigars, pipes, hookahs, tobacco and tobacco products, that is, cigarettes, wrap cigarettes, cigars, pipes before or before alcohol use, can also pose a risk for drugs,” Prof. Dr. said. As a matter of fact, compared to those who use drugs and those who don’t, we see that the history of tobacco use, alcohol use history, or history of sedative or stimulant drug use is very high in those who use drugs without a doctor’s warning. All of this should be a warning to us,” he said.

Prof. Dr. also said, “The most important thing is that people don’t start drugs at all. That is, demand is being fought and drugs are not being encouraged. I believe that this issue is above all,” he said.
