WHAT ARE THE EYE PROBLEMS SPECIFIC TO MEN?

Turkey Medicals, “Last week we wrote about how the menstrual cycle and menopause in women affect eye health. This week, let’s summarize the eye problems specific to men..

Some eye diseases and eye injuries are more common in men. The main eye diseases that are more common in men are the following:

– Some types of eye pressure (eg. pigmentary glaucoma)
.
– Severe forms of eye allergy (eg. vernal keratoconjunctivitis)
.
– Some diseases of the retina (the nerve layer of the eye) (eg. Coat’s disease)
.
– Some diseases of the eye nerve (eg. Leber hereditary optic neuropathy)
.
– Uveitis due to Behcet’s disease (inflammation of the eye)

Eye injuries are also 2 times more common in men than in women. Men in their twenties are the group most at risk for eye injuries.

.
DRUGS FOR SEXUAL IMPOTENCE AFFECT VISION

Currently, drugs that are commonly used to treat male sexual impotence can affect the vessels of the retina, leading to bluish vision, difficulty distinguishing blue from green, and light sensitivity. If users are experiencing these types of vision complaints, they should be careful about driving. These complaints about vision are temporary and do not become permanent…

In a very small number of people who use these drugs, vision loss can develop due to a nutritional disorder in the optic nerve called “ischemic neuropathy”. However, ischemic neuropathy is already a disease specific to the 45-65 age group and can also be monitored without the use of the mentioned drugs. In other words, it is impossible to consider these drugs as the only culprit of vision loss. In those who have ischemic neuropathy of one eye, it is recommended not to use drugs for sexual impotence.

.
PROSTATE MEDICATIONS MAKE CATARACT SURGERY DIFFICULT

Another group of drugs that only men use is prostate medications. These drugs used to treat prostate enlargement; they affect the muscle that dilates the pupil, preventing the growth of the pupil. This situation makes Turkish hospital cataract surgery technically difficult and requires additional measures to be taken during surgery. Therefore, if you are using this type of prostate medication, you should tell your ophthalmologist in Turkey, before cataract surgery.
