BEACH BEAUTY MARMARIS, BOZ BURUN AND MUST THE GREEN SEA

Marmaris offers many options both for mass tourism and for a quiet holiday alone with nature. No matter how you prefer a holiday, in Marmaris, where I live, you will encounter a magnificent sea, breathtaking coves from each other and a treasure trove of history that goes back thousands of years. And the fun is just beginning.

Actually, I like the winter months of this beautiful county better. I walk, I smell, I look at the sea in the bays. I drink tea and chat in coffee shops. I can be festive in the Aegean Sundays. Five years ago, I took refuge in a modest beach hostel in the village of Marmaris, far from the crowds and bustle of the big city, having fun with my loved ones and knowing what I was eating. As soon as I woke up every morning, I found myself in the sparkling sea. When I fell in love with the sound of Puhu birds coming from the depths of the forest just behind me in the silence of the nights, my wife Filiz and I decided to settle here. Now we love our lives as 3.5-year-old Blossoms. There are many reasons for this.

The “Welcome to Marmaris National Park” sign, which greets those who reach the district by road, makes you feel that you have come to a very different place at the first moment.

Marmaris, in the middle of a giant natural area that was protected in 1996, is the only district surrounded by national parks. The area is listed by the Wildlife Conservation Trust (WWF) as one of 25 special spot in the world.

.
IN THE HEART OF TURKISH AMAZED NATURE

Marmaris always reminds you that you are in the heart of nature. You can encounter species you’ve never seen before, or with a ‘Caretta caretta’ on the beach you can’t meet.

Marmaris is a very pleasant place to explore on foot in the morning and afternoon, when the sun does not show its burning effect. As the Carian historian Herodotus quoted, the region bears traces of deep-rooted civilizations dating back to 3000 BC. Marmaris, which also hosts an important part of the Kanuni road that followed Sultan Suleiman, who set foot in the region to conquer Rhodes in the 16th century, is a place to admire with its streets decorated with bougainvillea and uninterrupted coastline of 11 kilometers.

.
EVERYTHING YOU’RE LOOKING FOR IN THE YACHT MARINA

You can start your environmental and gulet boat trips in the district mavi tours center from Yolculuk Marina. Just a few minutes ‘ walk from the liveliest places in Marmaris, the marina is full of brand coffee shops, restaurants, boutique shops and gift shops. Bars are across the street. There is also a store where diving and swimming supplies are sold to those who want to. Facilities such as tennis court, yacht and Sailing Club, pharmacy, hospital, cinema, hotel, football field, indoor gym.

Kaleici, next door to Netsel Marina, has been transformed into one of the most beautiful neighborhoods of the Aegean with its narrow streets, souvenir shops, cafes and restaurants that smell of history. When you leave behind the Old Mosque of 1789 and follow the road to the castle, the caravanserai on the right side was built in the name of Hafsa Sultan, the mother of Suleiman the magnificent. The Han, whose inscription reads the date 1545, is one of the only monumental structures of Marmaris and one of the few in the region. Marmaris Castle rises above Kaleiçi Hill, which resembles a maze surrounded by whitewashed walls. Surrounded by high walls, the castle’s arched gate opens into a dazzling interior reminiscent of Andalusian Gardens. All corners of the garden, decorated with elegant palm trees that stretch out into the azure sky, are full of historical artifacts. Tombstones from the Ottoman era, ancient statues, giant ship anchors, column heads, pedestals and much more.

The Archaeological Museum, which serves in four halls hidden in the dehliz of the castle, has a treasure: ancient lamps, coins, glass artifacts, busts, sarcophagi and pottery displayed here were unearthed during the excavations of Knidos, Burgas, Hisaronu and Loryma. Among the works on display in the museum, the most striking are the figurines, which we can call the predecessor of the world-famous lion Decidos. And an amphora collection that points to Marmaris’s deep-rooted maritime past… The museum is open every day of the week from 8.30 am to 19.30 pm. Entrance fee 27 lira, müzekart is also valid.

In the immediate vicinity of Marmaris, an important port settlement of every period from the Carians to Alexander the Great, from Rome to the Ottoman Empire, there are traces of exactly 12 different ancient cities. I’m reaching for citrus to discover one of them. Amos, which is reached by a pleasant journey of about 20 minutes using the Icmeler-Turunç route, is on the Caria Road. In the ancient settlement on a steep hill to the northwest of Kumlubük Bay, you can see a theater, temple and some sculptural pedestals. In this place, known in history as ‘Rhodes Karsiyaka’, it is possible to distinguish many deconstructed remains scattered among the trees. Amos, which has recently resumed excavation and editing, is very impressive with its panoramic viewing terraces.

.
VILLAGE TO VILLAGE BY BOAT TOUR

In the nearby bays, blue and green are almost interlocking and give us a turquoise sea, immaculate wide greener beaches and an untouched nature. If you like Turunç, Amos and Kumlubük beaches, the choice is yours… ” Sunbathing on the beach is not for me ” if you are one of those who say a comfortable sailboat foam foam spreading waves after the Blue journey can also go. Rest assured, Marmaris is one of the most accurate addresses for Blue Cruise. Blue Cruises, which began in the Gulf of Gokova in the 1950s, mean days dedicated entirely to the sea, history and nature, in deep silence. Depending on your preference, you can participate in one of the Day, Weekend Special or weekly tours. Swimming, sunbathing and decking ancient trails in any Bay are among the opportunities offered to blue travelers. Not to mention spending a lot of time at beach restaurants and tasting fresh seafood.

.
BOZBURUN TURN, ENTRANCE GATE

In addition, those who wish can also travel blue by land in Marmaris. The route, which joins the shores of the Bozburun Peninsula, which runs to the south of the district, promises spectacular views. The entrance gate of the peninsula starts from the Bozburun turn at the 21st kilometer of the Marmaris-Datça road. Orhaniye Bay on the road, a refuge of colorful boats. In the middle of the mountains, Kızkumu, on the shore of the sheep that shines like an evil eye bead, brings together the favorite beaches of the peninsula. The beach, which resembles a tongue of sand stretching out to the sea, is tile red… My next stop is Selimiye, a small fishing village with its back against the green Hills.

Until 20 years ago, the village, which can only be reached by sea, is turning step by step into the Alaçatı of the Southern Aegean. Restaurants that serve fresh seafood of the season, especially octopus, with local accompanists, are also a favorite of sailboats. After Selimiye, the pleasure of cruising the exciting road that runs along the banks of the cliffs is high. After Bozburun, which inspired the songs of Bülent Ortaçgil with its calm and natural beauty, a magnificent sunset view awaits walkers in Söğüt. While stopping by, you can explore Taşlıca, the last settlement at the far end of the Bozburun Peninsula, and explore the beautiful Pirate Bay and the ancient city of Loryma by jumping on the captain’s boat Memduh (Keleş) from the Port of Serçe, the pier of the village.

About Willow, whose old name is Saranda… Today’s Willow is known for its fish restaurants. Almost every sailboat sailing on the shores of Marmaris, fond of taste, stops by Söğüt for food. Keep in mind that while eating at Saranda, you can meet a Hollywood star at your next table. Don’t let that surprise you.

.
PROPRIETARY PINE HONEY

Local managers are developing projects to make Marmaris the star of the world again in tourism. Bringing ancient Icmeler Ilica to health tourism is one of them. Among the goals is to decipher the historical, cultural and strategic analyses of Marmaris and to move to sustainable tourism. It is also aimed to brand Marmaris pine honey, which is registered as an original product with a Geographical Indication, and to introduce the cultural values of the region to the world. On the other hand, Kameriye Island (Camellia), home to an 1800-year-old monastery complex, is becoming an important stop on the way to faith tourism. In addition, the famous Bar Street, where the heart of Marmaris’s nightlife Beats, is returning to its old days after a 22-month break due to the pandemic property.
