WHAT ARE SYMPTOMS OF HERPES ON LIPS? HOW SHOULD WE PROTECT OURSELVES?

When we enter a stressful process, when we have nightmares at night, when we are preparing for an exam or a project, we encounter sores on our lips or inside our mouth, many of us may even guess that it is herpes. So, what is herpes on the lips? Is it possible to treat it with a laser? What are the symptoms of herpes? Is it contagious? How should we be protected? Turkey Medicals member and hospital clinic Dentist gave information about this issue.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) that can occur almost anywhere in the body according to the subtypes of the virus, starting with water-filled blisters and then characterized by the scarring of the wound.

HSV is considered to be one of the most common infectious viruses worldwide. HSV is divided into two subclasses, type 1 and type 2; type 1 is seen in adults around the mouth, lips, face and nose, while type 2 is more common in the genital areas.

Herpes Labialis is a type of herpes caused by the HSV type 1 virus. It often occurs around the mouth, especially on the lips, nose and chin.

It appears as vesicles filled with water inside, and after an average of a week, these vesicles heal by binding to the shell.

Herpes on the lips often occurs for the following reasons:

Psychological conditions such as stress, excitement, trauma. A lifestyle that reduces body resistance, such as fatigue, insomnia. Disorders in which the immune system is weakened, such as colds, flu, and febrile illnesses. Conditions in which the immune system is suppressed due to drugs used in patients with AIDS, cancer, and organ transplants. Physical causes, such as excessive sun or UV exposure.

Herpes on the lips is also observed in 2 out of 3 of the world’s population, and tests conducted in 90% of adults have shown that there is this virus, but it manifests itself only when the immune system is weakened and the above causes occur. In other words, in order for the virus to cause disease on the lip, it must defeat the immune system.

Symptoms of the first virus attack appear within 3 weeks after contact with a person with herpes. This process, which is more common in children, is accompanied by the appearance of water-filled bubbles in the mouth, fever, weakness and irritability. People usually experience burning, itching, and stinging sensations on the skin where redness has formed. The first attack is always the most painful, the next attacks are not so painful.

The first entry of the virus into our body usually occurs in infancy and childhood through contact with our family or close environment. The herpes virus is always able to be transmitted, but especially the vesicular stage, where water bubbles appear, is the stage where there is the most transmission. It is mostly transmitted from items that have contact with the face with the lip, such as kissing, using common items, shaving knives.

Since a vaccine against this virus has not yet been developed, there is no way to prevent transmission and disease, so protecting is the most effective method. We should avoid contact with people with herpes, restrict the use of common items, and avoid hugging and kissing behaviors.

Diagnosis of herpes and methods of treatment

Herpes is a condition that is often easily diagnosed by seeing a dentist or skin specialist, and for an accurate diagnosis, he can take a swab sample from water-filled vesicles and apply for laboratory tests.

Antiviral drugs derived from acyclovir are used in the traditional treatment of herpes. These drugs can be used as creams, pills or, in severe cases, by injection (injection).

It is important to start drug therapy in the first 1-2 days in order to alleviate the painful process and prevent the size of the lesion. The disadvantages of these drugs are some undesirable side effects, the fact that viruses develop resistance to these drugs and do not show sufficient effect in subsequent recurrent attacks.

Often the appearance of herpes again in the place where it appeared once is another problem that cannot be solved. The absence of an effective treatment of herpes with medication can cause a person both restriction in social life and discomfort from an aesthetic point of view.

On the other hand, along with the developing laser technology, the treatment of herpes viruses is now quite effective. The rapid inactivation of viruses in the area exposed to laser beams allows the painful process to end in a short time.

According to studies conducted, the fact that there is almost no more herpes in the areas treated with a laser compared to those treated with a drug makes laser therapy a more popular treatment option every day.

Among the advantages of the use of laser in the treatment of herpes are:

Herpes medication, the possibility is very low, the impact to provide comfort to people by showing in a short period of time, the application is quite simple and painless, and the potential loss of antiviral drugs that are used to pass in front of the side effects of drug interactions, especially in elderly individuals and in people with weakened immune systems can be counted on to provide rapid recovery by reducing drug interactions.
