TOURISTS ARRIVING IN ISTANBUL IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2021 DECREASED

According to Istanbul City Municipality IBB data, the number of tourists arriving in Istanbul in the first quarter of 2021 decreased by 47.7 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. Russia was the country where the most foreign tourists came to Istanbul.

According to the “tourism Bulletin May 2021” report prepared by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Planning Agency (IPA), the number of tourists arriving in Istanbul in the first quarter of 2021 decreased by 47.7 percent compared to the same period of the previous year and was 1 million 231 thousand.

The number of tourists decreased by 53.9 percent across Turkey and decreased to 1 million 953 thousand. In 2020, 55.5 percent of the total tourists who came to Turkey came to Istanbul, while in the same period of 2021, this figure rose to 63 percent.

99.4 percent of tourists arriving in Istanbul came by airline. 74 percent of these visitors used Istanbul airport and 25 percent used Sabiha Gokcen Airport.

188 THOUSAND PEOPLE CAME FROM RUSSIA

In the first quarter of 2021, the country where the most tourists came to Istanbul was the Russian Federation with 188 thousand people. The Russian Federation was followed by Iran with 118 thousand people, Germany with 116 thousand people, Ukraine with 72 thousand people and Iraq with 45 thousand people, respectively.

Compared to the same period of 2020, the number of tourists from the Russian Federation increased by 25 percent, the number of tourists from Iran increased by 59 percent, and the number of tourists from Ukraine increased by 226 percent. The number of tourists from Germany decreased by 46 percent and the number of tourists from Iraq by 45 percent.

NUMBER OF TOURISTS STAYING DOWN

In the first quarter of 2021 in Istanbul, the number of domestic tourists coming to accommodation facilities decreased by 15.6 percent and the number of foreign tourists decreased by 8.5 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

In March, compared to the same period of the previous year, the number of domestic tourists staying in Istanbul increased by 80.1 percent, and the number of foreign tourists increased by 208.9 percent. In the first quarter, the share of foreign tourists staying in Istanbul was 59.6 percent.

Looking at the total overnight stay in accommodation facilities, the total overnight stay decreased by 37 percent in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the same period of the previous year. In Istanbul, the average occupancy rate of accommodation facilities in March 2020 was 24.4 percent, while in the same period of 2021, the occupancy rate rose to 33.3 percent.

FIRST 4-MONTH FLIGHT STATISTICS

In the first four months of 2021, 44.7 percent of total flights in Turkey took place in Istanbul. Of these flights in Istanbul, 40.4 percent were domestic flights and 59.6 percent were international flights.

During this period, the number of passengers arriving and departing Istanbul by air reached 13 million, while the number of passengers arriving and departing on all flights in Turkey reached 23 million. 44.8 percent of the passengers arriving and leaving Istanbul were domestic and 55.2 percent were international passengers.
