EYE PROSTHESIS MAKES YOU LAUGH

The idea of making a prosthetic eye instead of a blind eye is an emotionally challenging decision for patients, regardless of the reason, said an Associate Professor of eye diseases. Doctor, “but with very good surgery and first-class prosthetic craftsmanship, most patients get face-laughing results,” he said.

Antalya Eye Hospital Eye Diseases Specialist Assoc.Dr. listed what treatment options are in an eye that does not see as follows: “in an eye that does not see, in some cases symmetrical results can be achieved with colored contact lenses or prostheses placed above the eye without surgery. But in order for this to be done, first of all, the eye that does not see must be suitable for it. With special surgeries, such eyes can be made into prosthetics. If, despite all the efforts, the prosthesis cannot be worn on the eye, in addition, if there are complaints that disturb the person, such as pain in the eye, redness, watering, making their daily life uninhabitable, the blind eye should be taken and made suitable for the installation of the prosthesis. Although many patients do not have complaints, they also choose a prosthetic eye for cosmetic purposes due to the results that are close to perfect.”

Stating that 2 methods are mainly applied in prosthetic eye surgery, Doctor said: “the first and most commonly used method is the Evisseration method, in which only the eye contents are emptied. In this method, the eye muscles are not touched in any way. After the contents of the blind eye are emptied, an orbital implant is inserted in its place to fill this gap. The surgery takes about 30 minutes and can be performed under local or general anesthesia. The second method used is what we call enucleation, in which the entire eye is removed. In muscle, the eye is removed from the eye and the eye is removed as a whole. Flex the eye muscles are placed on the orbital implant, which is placed on the eye. In cases where the eye does not develop at all, such as eye tumors or micropthalmia, enucleation may become necessary. No matter what method is applied, enucleation or eviseration, a very good surgical and prosthetic crafts manship is required for an excellent result,” he said.

HOW MANY TYPES OF ORBITAL IMPLANTS ARE USED IN PROSTHETIC SURGERY?

Dr, “Orbital implants are round-shaped special materials that can be artificial or natural, used to replace the space lost after prosthetic surgery. Currently, there are many different types of orbital implants. The most commonly used are implants made of silicone, acrylic, polyethylene and hydroxyapatite material.

Each implant has its own unique minus and Plus features. Basically, they all perform the same task, but the characteristics of the eye that do not see when choosing an implant, the doctor’s experience in this regard, and patient preferences become important. Orbital implants are made of different sizes. Sizes range from 14 mm to 22 mm.

Although the size of the orbital implant to be used varies from person to person, the use of an implant that is often 20 mm or larger in adults is critical to the movement of the prosthesis to be performed later. In children and infants, smaller-diameter implants can be used,” he said.

WHEN IS THE PROSTHETIC EYE FIRST APPLIED ?

Prosthetic eye surgery is applied under local or general anesthesia expressing Dr, ” this is completely related to the eye, and the general condition of the patient. After surgery, patients can go home if they feel good, but often our patients are invited to the hospital one night is our choice to provide more comfortable pain control after surgery. Immediately after surgery, the eye is closed and opened the next day. After dressing the next day, drops and antibiotic treatment are given.

After surgery, patients may feel pain for several days, of course, this varies from patient to patient. The most important cause of pain is that the operated eye also moves with the movement of the intact eye. What our patients should not forget is that a plastic protector called “conformer” will be placed on the inside until the prosthesis is made. Patients with surgery can return to work in about 1 Week. We recommend that our patients wear eye pads when they go out until the prosthesis is made, so that the eye does not get infected with germs. 1 after the earliest operation of the prosthesis. It can be done per month.

This period is the minimum time required for the healing of the surgical site. 1.after the month, if recovery is sufficient, patients are referred to the prosthetic center to perform the prosthetic eye. In the prosthesis Center, a personalized prosthesis is made to the patient, and this period can last about 3-4 days,” he said.

HOW DOES A PROSTHETIC EYE LOOK ? HOW SHOULD PROSTHETIC EYE CARE BE?

Turkish Eye Diseases Specialist Assoc.Dr. and Turkey Medicals member, “after the prosthetic eye is made, our patients soon get used to their prosthetics and the prosthesis becomes a part of their body. Our patients do not need to wear and remove the prosthetic eye all the time. Cleaning and control of the prosthesis should be performed by ophthalmologists and ocularists in prosthetic centers with certain decals.

After very good surgery and prosthetic craftsmanship, the prosthetic eye can move at a rate close to the intact eye. Patients can perform all kinds of activities with a prosthetic eye. They can go to sea and play sports. In addition, we recommend that our patients use artificial tear medications in order to make the prosthetic eye look more alive and ensure its slipperiness.

But despite all applications, over time the prosthesis becomes old and loses its brightness, in addition, the socket where the prosthesis stops and we call the “socket” undergoes changes, so changing the prosthesis every 3-4 years is very important in terms of the suitability of the prosthesis,” he said.

A second operation in Turkey Antalya is not required as long as prosthetic eye surgery is performed well, Dr. noted, “the orbital implant placed with the surgery is in place for life without problems. But unfortunately, undesirable side effects can be observed due to poorly performed surgeries and improper placement of orbital implants.

Over time, dislocation of the prosthesis, opening of the surface, continuous Burr in the patient are undesirable side effects. In patients, constant feeling of Burr and rahtlessness indicates that the prosthesis is not suitable with the socket. This condition requires a reconsideration of the prosthesis. Unfortunately, the most common condition becomes part of their body. Our patients do not need to wear and remove the prosthetic eye all the time.
