THE 3 BIGGEST DANGERS OF ANEMIA

Noting that the diagnosis and treatment of anemia is very important, Prof. Dr. “This problem makes a person sick, ages them prematurely and can kill them,” was said.

Anemia, which is called ‘anemia’ in medical parlance and is defined as a decrease in red blood cells (erythrocytes), the red blood cells that give blood its color, is a common problem in our society. But most often it is ignored.

However, the cause of anemia should definitely be determined. Turkey Medicals member Izmir MedicalPark JCI hospital head of clinic Internal Medicine Specialist, Professor Doctor gave the following information about the subject:

.
IT IS NOT A DISEASE, BUT A SYMPTOM

In addition to the consequences of anemia, its causes also need to be examined in detail. Because it is one of the signs and symptoms of many important diseases, sometimes it is just the only sign. Unfortunately, anemia remains a finding that is not given enough attention. However, it is a very important symptom that accompanies many diseases, especially cancer, rheumatic diseases, chronic infections, diabetes, kidney failure. This is a very common situation in society. It is extremely important to diagnose anemia, determine what it depends on, and treat it. Because it leads to serious diseases, ages prematurely and can kill.

.
HERE ARE THE SYMPTOMS

Anemia causes the following symptoms.

– Weakness, fatigue, rapid fatigue

– Palpitations, tachycardia

– Dizziness, feeling unwell

– Menstrual irregularities

– Sexual dysfunction

– Headache

– Ringing and buzzing in the ears

– Numbness and tingling in the arms and legs (lack of B12)

– Loss of appetite, nausea, difficulty swallowing (iron deficiency)

– Burning in the tongue and inability to taste (lack of B12)

– Chest pain

– Fever

– Pallor of the skin, eye whites and hand moon lines

– Shortness of breath that comes with exertion

– Irritability, decreased ability to concentrate

.
HOW TO UNDERSTAND IT?

The diagnosis of anemia can be made by looking at the amount of hemoglobin in the blood, the value of hematocrit, and the number of erythrocytes. A number of parameters related to erythrocytes on a hemogram that is a blood test (such as erythrocyte volume=MCV) reveal the cause of anemia.

.
BEWARE OF IRON DEFICIENCY IN MEN

Iron deficiency anemia can be diagnosed by looking at blood iron, serum total iron binding capacity, ferritin levels. Iron deficiency affects as much as 25 percent of the entire world’s population and is the most common nutritional disorder. Loss occurs through the intestines and the genital tract in women. Some of the chronic blood loss is insidious and does not lead to any signs and symptoms. Causes such as stomach ulcers, stomach hernias, varicose veins in the esophagus and stomach, colon polyps, inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, parasites, chronic aspirin and blood thinners can lead to ‘iron deficiency anemia’.

Iron deficiency anemia is the most common cause of iron deficiency anemia in women due to menstrual bleeding, while iron deficiency anemia seen in men at an adult age should definitely be considered as a serious finding. Iron deficiency anemia in men can be the first sign of cancer, especially gastrointestinal cancer. Early diagnosis and treatment will be life-saving. In such a situation, an endoscopic examination of the gastrointestinal tract is very important from a diagnostic point of view. Iron deficiency anemia, which cannot be explained by menstrual bleeding in women again, should be alarming in terms of gynecological tumors.

.
FIRST OF ALL, THE REASON SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED

When iron deficiency is diagnosed, there are two goals of treatment. It is necessary to find out the cause of iron deficiency and eliminate it, then replenish iron stores with iron therapy. Treatment for iron deficiency cannot be successful unless the cause is found and eliminated. For example, in a case of bowel cancer, iron treatment alone cannot be successful because iron and blood loss continue. Blood transfusions are never recommended for the treatment of iron deficiency.

Blood transfusion is a very important procedure and leads to results such as live tissue transplantation. A blood transfusion should never be performed unless there is an acute, newly occurring bleeding condition. Iron treatment should be carried out with iron salts alone. Divalent iron salts are more easily absorbed than trivalent iron salts. Iron preparations enriched with vitamins are not suitable. Iron preparations can cause side effects in the gastrointestinal tract, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation.
.

Therefore, treatment should be started in low doses, and the drug should be taken between meals if possible. Iron therapy can cause a discoloration in the color of feces similar to bleeding.
