WHAT IS THE EGG FREEZING PROCESS? IS THERE AN AGE LIMIT FOR EGG FREEZING?

Turkish Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist Prof. Dr. says that this practice is in demand, especially for women living in metropolitan areas. So is there an age limit for the egg freezing process in Turkey, which gives it an important advantage? Here are the curious ones…

If you think that you will not be able to have suitable conditions for having a child anytime soon, and especially if you have a risk of early menopause, technology offers an important opportunity: Egg freezing. So what do we know about this process?

Turkey Medicals Group member and Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist Prof. Dr. answered the curious questions for our readers.

.
WHO DOES IT PROVIDE AN ADVANTAGE FOR?

First of all, what is the egg freezing process? Can you tell me briefly?

Egg freezing is the freezing of an egg obtained from a woman’s ovary and storing it for future use. One of the first options that comes to mind recently for women who want to have children but cannot give up their career goals or are at risk of early menopause is to freeze eggs. Although women cannot find the prince who adorns their dreams and meet the prospective wife in the conditions they are looking for, they can protect their dreams of having a baby until then thanks to the egg freezing process and thus have the power to control the time of becoming a mother themselves.

.
IT CAN BE STORED FOR 40 YEARS

What are the criteria that positively affect the success of egg freezing?

Especially recently, we have been applying the freezing technique called vitrification in our laboratories and this method gives more successful results than the programmed freezing techniques in many laboratories. In this case, the better the freezing /thawing techniques are applied, the greater the chances of patients undergoing treatment getting a total pregnancy. In addition, frozen egg cells can be stored for very long periods of time without deteriorating their quality if the conditions in which they are stored are maintained unchanged. Successful examples of this in the world are currently limited to 30-40 years, but as time goes on, these numbers will also rise higher.

.
THE MOST CRITICAL AGE FOR FREEZING EGGS

What criteria are important for the egg freezing process? Which age group do you recommend specifically for? When can it be done at the latest?

In accordance with the current regulation in Turkey, cancer diagnoses and treatments that will pose a risk to reproductive functions, as well as people who will undergo serious surgery, as well as single women who do not have such indications, but have a low egg reserve and /or are at risk of early menopause, can freeze their eggs. This opportunity is an extremely important opportunity for ladies who will be at risk or may disappear in the near future due to the problems mentioned, but in order for the technique to be useful to these people, the first and most important stage is the knowledge and understanding of the issue by the general public. In our clinic, we conduct a comprehensive study to determine who has applied for an egg freezing procedure and its results. Preliminary results of the study show that the average age of the patients who applied to our clinic for egg freezing and underwent the procedure was 39.6 years. According to the current medical literature, the proportion of women under the age of 35 who have a high chance of freezing enough eggs in a single session is only 14%.

Although we freeze eggs and stop time, we do not have the power to change the egg quality depending on the age of the woman during the freezing process. Therefore, the most important parameter that should be taken into account when providing the necessary information to women who want to have an operation is the age of the woman at the time the eggs were frozen. Women with low egg reserves are about 20% more likely to have a baby in Turkey with IVF treatment at the age of 40, while at the age of 45 the probability of having a baby decreases to 1%. Given these results, performing the procedure at the earliest possible age is the most correct approach to having a successful and healthy baby with both the processing load and the eggs that are frozen in the future.

.
THE METROPOLIS PREFERS WOMEN THE MOST

Is there any statistical information about this application in Turkey? In which regions is it most preferred?

As of 2017, about 100 women apply to our clinics every month with a request to freeze eggs. After the applications are evaluated legally and medically, we perform the egg freezing process in cases where the necessary conditions can be met. A significant part of the applications we receive are especially from women living in metropolitan cities, focused on their careers, over the age of 40 and approaching menopause. The point that we want to emphasize in this regard is that the success of egg cells frozen and stored in egg freezing applications in their use for the purpose of having children in the future depends significantly on the age of the woman and the quality of the egg. For this reason, it is very important that ladies under the age of 40 who do not plan to have children in the near future, but whose ovarian reserve tends to decrease, receive information about the application and can plan before spending a lot of time.
