USA DRUG VICTIMS UP 30 PER CENT

Drug overdose deaths rose by close to 30% in the United States of America last year, the highest number ever recorded, according to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

More than 93,000 people died from drug overdoses in 2020, according to data released by the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Center for Health Statistics. The number of drug deaths in 2019 is 72,151.

Overdose deaths from synthetic opioids and psychostimulants such as methamphetamine have also increased. Deaths from natural and semi-synthetic opioids, as well as cocaine deaths, increased in 2020.

The director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of the National Institutes of Health, is Dr. Nora Volkow said: “this is the highest overdose death ever recorded in a 12-month period and the largest increase seen since 1999. This data is creepy. The covid-19 outbreak has created a devastating collision of health crises in America,” he said.
