HOW MANY STEPS SHOULD WE TAKE ON DAILY ACTIVITY?

A recent study at the Harvard Medical School claimed that 10 thousand steps, often recommended, are ‘extreme’, while just 4,400 steps a day may be enough to protect against serious diseases. This research has created controversy. So, has the knowledge that we must take 10 thousand steps a day for a healthy life that the whole world has long accepted suddenly become valid?

We asked the experts for you, here are their answers.

.
8 THOUSAND STEPS IS ENOUGH

Turkish Internal Medicine Specialist Doctor. “The amount of walking we recommend for a healthy life varies according to age and the person’s diseases. We recommend 4 thousand steps for people with advanced age, heart or shortness of breath, while we recommend 8 thousand steps for young, healthy people with fitness to take an average of daily. Especially walking too much every day can cause arthritis in the kneecaps, joint damage and increases in blood pressure due to more load on the heart. An ideal level of walking every day prevents bone resorption, and if it is exaggerated, it damages the bone by putting pressure on it. It is ideal for healthy people to take between 6 thousand and 8 thousand steps on a straight road with a high tempo.” she said.

.
10K IS NOT IDEAL

Turkish Dietitian, “I am of the opinion that taking 10 thousand steps a day is not ideal for everyone. I think that especially those with chronic health problems and those with knee, joint or lower back problems should be more careful about this. In addition, stressing ourselves that I will take 10 thousand steps every day also significantly reduces the beneficial effects of this walk. Rather than stress during and after walking, there should be relaxation and happiness. For this reason, my suggestion is to regularly walk under the conditions of your time and health, rather than being stuck in the number of steps. In this way, you will see that you are more efficient and enjoy the walks you make.” was said.

.
MISINTERPRETED

Turkish Cardiovascular Surgeon Professor Doctor, “A study published in the journal JAMA in 2019, but they misinterpreted the study. In the study, they evaluated people by looking at their daily activity levels. Compared to those who took 2700 steps, the death rate was lower for those who took 4,400 steps. But as the activity rate increased, the death rate fell further. After 7,500 steps, the death rate didn’t matter. But it is necessary not to reduce the issue to just the number of steps, the intensity, frequency and duration of exercise are other important factors. Instead of misrepresenting scientific data in this way, we should encourage the public to participate in sports and active life.” he said.
