ABOUT BREAST REPAIR AFTER BREAST CANCER

Breast tissue is a symbol of femininity, productivity, motherhood and sexuality. The most feared disease of this tissue is, of course, breast cancer. Breast cancer is on the rise and occurs at any time in life, especially in one out of every eight women in Western societies.

Turkey Medicals member and JCI hospital Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Specialist Prof Dr. explained that breast cancer patients correct the deformation they experience in the chest area by doing breast reconstruction surgery again.

Why is breast repair important after breast cancer?

Breast cancer treatment should be performed by a team that includes general surgery, oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, and plastic surgery. Despite the advanced methods of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, the best and reliable treatment for breast cancer is still surgical removal of the breast. Depending on the type of cancer, its prevalence, breast tissue is partially or completely removed. This operation, called a mastectomy, is still the most reliable method for treating breast cancer. Whether it is partially removed or the entire breast tissue is removed, the remaining physical deformation includes the deterioration of body integrity and psychological repercussions.

Breast reconstruction is the most common type of breast reconstruction. But we can not say that there is enough information and consciousness about this in society. Due to this insufficient information, breast reconstruction simultaneously with mastectomy is much less resorted to in Turkey than in the rest of the world.

How does the world look at this issue?

A breast reconstruction is called a breast reconstruction when the breast is removed due to a mastectomy. Breast repair can be done at two separate times, simultaneously or late in terms of timing. At the same time, when breast cancer surgery is performed for simultaneous repair, after performing a mastectomy, breast reconstruction begins. Breast cancer patients who are caught at an early stage are suitable candidates for simultaneous repair.

A more accurate approach may be to apply repair to patients diagnosed at an advanced stage, or to undergo radiation therapy (radiotherapy) after several years of disease-free treatment.

This is also called late-stage repair. Whether it is simultaneous or late repair, this serious operation should be performed by Specialist Turkish plastic surgeons. Your plastic surgeon will decide on the aesthetics of the breast, Deconstructing the nipple and its surroundings, as well as correcting breast asymmetries, choosing the most suitable for the patient’s body from among many methods. Awareness of this issue is gradually increasing all over the world, in developed countries for this reason, simultaneous repairs are being carried out much more. Breast cancer treatment is necessarily performed by a team.

How many women undergo surgery for cancer in Turkey?

One million new cases of breast cancer are detected every year all over the world. On average, there are 180 thousand new cases of cancer in Turkey every year. About 55 thousand of these cases are female cancer cases. Of the 60 thousand cases that are newly seen in women every year, breast cancer is the most common form in numbers. About half of the new cases of cancer in fifty-five thousand women are breast cancer. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women in Turkey.

How many of them lose their breasts?

Since diagnostic methods and early detection practices are still not being used adequately in Turkey, mastectomy is performed in about 70% of diagnosed cases, but 30% of them are treated with breast-conserving surgeries.

How many prostheses, reconstructions, etc. is he having a stroke?

Two basic materials can be used for breast construction: the patient’s own tissues or silicone prostheses. If the patient’s own tissue is to be used, the preferred area in the first place is the abdominal tissue at the bottom of the navel. The abdominal area is a soft, shapeable area that is very similar to a normal breast, providing sufficient tissue. In the use of abdominal tissue for breast construction; it is desirable that the abdominal tissue is in sufficient condition for such an application, it is slightly saggy and oily. Apart from the abdomen, the back and hip area can also be used for the breast.

In patients who smoke, the chances of success of these methods decrease markedly. It is also possible to make breast tissue with a silicone prosthesis. In this method, which has a shorter surgical time and recovery is faster, it is first inflated in one, two months by inserting a hollow silicone balloon.
.

So when a sufficient expansion is achieved, a permanent silicone prosthesis is also placed to the breast patient. Reconstruction of the patient’s own tissue and prosthetics is used by half.
