WHY YOU DON’T KNOW THE BLOOD TYPE OF YOUR PET?

Just like humans, dogs and cats need a blood transfusion to get rid of various diseases or traumatic events. Knowing your pet’s blood type can save the life of your or someone else’s pet when there is an urgent need for blood.

So do you know your pet’s blood type?

The Veterinarian Dr. gave the following information about learning your pet’s blood type and blood type procedures:

  • 13 blood groups have been identified in dogs and 3 in cats. In terms of DEA 1.1 and DEA12 factors in dogs, they are called positive and negative; in cats, they are called group A, B, AB.
    .
  • Blood transfusion may be urgently needed in acute blood loss, anemia, systemic diseases. Knowing your pet’s blood type is of life-saving importance when intervening in emergency situations.
    .
  • Although the same group of blood is preferred during a blood transfusion, in cases where a suitable donor is not found, type AB cats can take blood from groups A and B cats. But cats with groups A and B should receive blood from their own blood group.
    .
  • In an emergency, blood transfusions are performed by determining the patient’s and donor’s blood groups using rapid test kits.

.
THERE IS A PET BLOOD BANK IN TURKEY, THERE ARE NO DONORS

The first animal blood bank in Turkey was opened within the Department of Physiology of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Istanbul University, but after that it cannot provide services because there are not enough donors.

When a blood donation is needed, a blood transfusion is performed to the pet from the pet’s immediate environment or by contacting donors whose pet blood groups have been previously determined.”

There are scientific publications in peer reviewed journals about the cat blood groups. Veterinarian, insists on the importance of determining the blood type of your pet while it is healthy.
