WHAT SHOULD PARENTS WHO WANT TO RAISE THEIR CHILD IN A MULTIDISCIPLINARY WAY DO?

Beware of parents who want to raise their child in two or multiple ways!

A Turkish professor at the Department of Foreign Languages education at the Faculty of Education of Boğaziçi University, who has written a book called “Bilingualism and Multilingualism / Learning more than one Language in Early Childhood”, Doctor shares the subject of bilingualism and multilingualism in Turkey in full detail.

Turkey Medicals member and A professor who studies the linguistic, cognitive, neurological and sociological characteristics of multiple language learning in early childhood noted the following points about starting language learning at an early age:

“Starting language learning at an early age can be an advantage in many ways. But there are serious differences of opinion among researchers on this issue. But it is a fact that language learning does not take place soon from today to tomorrow. A period of 5-7 years is required to learn a language in an academic sense beyond basic communication skills. In this sense, the earlier you start and the better you do it, the better results you will be able to get. I think it will also prevent foreign language teaching, the bleeding wound of our country, from sagging until the university years. Of course, how you teach Turkish or foreigner children a second/foreign or Turkish language is also very important here.”

Age factor as well as home or school environments are critical to learning a second language,  said:

.
WHAT SHOULD PARENTS WHO WANT TO RAISE THEIR CHILD IN A MULTI-LANGUAGE?

“It is very important how much support the language the child speaks at home is in the community in which he lives and in the school environment. We find that when a second language is taught in a classroom setting, the language is largely devoid of the elements of personal life. Although we have schools where intensive foreign language education is conducted, this does not constitute the general norm of educational programs in our country. In some studies, there are findings that suggest that language learning, which begins in later years instead of early childhood, produces better results.

These results are important not only in terms of age, but also in terms of the emphasis on the importance of the learning environment in which the child lives, how many books are read at home, and the opportunities offered by the family. For example, a child growing up with books in his home seems to have both a knowledge of the presence of words in the languages he speaks and a much richer language of expression.”

.
RIGHT AND WRONG ABOUT DUALITY

Our Turkish Professor Doctor adds,  in her chapter for parents, gives the most curious questions about Noticed, and the right known mistakes. Here are some of them:

.
DOES EXPOSURE TO TWO LANGUAGES CONFUSE MY CHILD?

The answer to that question is, ‘no.’ Sometimes a child’s use of words from both languages in the same sentence can be perceived as confusion by parents. This is known in the bilingualism literature as language switching/mechanism switching, and is a normal form of use that adults also often do.

.
CAN MY CHILD USE BOTH LANGUAGES EQUALLY FLUENTLY AND CORRECTLY?

One of the most misunderstood issues in the field of bilingualism is the view that a bilingualist child speaks both languages equally fluently and correctly. Bilingual people may not be equally exposed to both languages due to access to educational opportunities and the home, community and working conditions in which they live. In addition, bilingual people use their language to do different things with different people, for different reasons, in different environments. Its fluency and proper use in each language is directly related to the extent to which a person needs that language and how often they use it.

.
DOES BEING TWO MAKE MY CHILD SMARTER?

Bilingualism doesn’t make your child smarter. Bilingualism has benefits for the development of the child in Turkey. But that doesn’t mean two-year-olds are smarter. There is no Turkish scientific data in the literature on this subject.

.
WHAT SHOULD PARENTS WHO WANT TO RAISE TWO CHILDREN DO?

He should talk to his Foreigner or Turkish children in a language where they feel comfortable! They should spend time together, play games, look for ways to communicate in different ways.
