Held in Antalya at the International Congress of the Organ Transplant Network, studies on the production of artificial organs such as the heart, kidneys, lungs, liver were evaluated using three-dimensional (3D) printer technology that will save the lives of thousands of patients waiting in line for organ transplantation.

Attending Congress and presenting on the production of artificial organs with three-dimensional printer technology, professor of the Department of General Surgery Ankara University Turkish Doctor in a statement, said that while human life averaged 45 in the 1800s, human life today has been extended to 75 years with advances in medicine.

“There are many patients waiting for organs in our country, but we do not have organs. The Organ is found, we take it from one person and transplant it to another person, but this time there are problems such as rejection of the tissue.” said.

One of the most progressive solutions in the field of medical Organ transplantation in Turkey is to produce artificial organs with tissue engineering and to transplant organs at peace with their own tissues to people, as well as to meet the need, “today we can produce simple tissues such as novelties, veins with stem cells. But we can’t combine cells one by one and turn them into more complex organs, such as the kidneys, heart, lungs, liver, for now.” he made his assessment.


Stating that three-dimensional printer technology allows the creation of three-dimensional shapes such as printing a picture on a sheet of paper, Turkish doctor noted that copies of previously scanned objects can be made using various materials such as plastic and metal in the industry.

“It is thought that cells derived from stem cells are placed in these printers, spraying cells instead of materials such as plastic and metal to produce complex organs containing 3-dimensional different cells. There are different studies for this. Today, it is possible to produce organs in Antalya Turkey at simple structural level, such as bladder muscle, vessels, but the work carried out to produce organs such as kidneys and liver is still in the laboratory stage. We’ll probably start hearing about organ transplants in Turkey hospitals from artificial organs in 15-20 years. Maybe a lot faster. Both in the world and in Turkey, work on this technology has begun.”


Emphasizing that organ transplants are performed from the most living donors in Turkey, noted that this also raises various ethical discussions. A healthy person who does not have any disease sacrifices his or her own organ for the life of his or her loved one, Turkish doctor said, adding that limited organs can be obtained from a living donor.

Stating that many problems will be overcome with artificial organs, was said:

“In the future, the patient will be able to continue his life as a kidney transplant without going on dialysis. No patient will suffer from liver failure, we will be able to fully treat liver tumors. But we still need a certain stage. All over the world, such as Turkey, we follow the work closely. There are similar studies in technocents with links to the University. The biggest dream of all transplant doctors is to transplant with a three-dimensional artificial organ. If we have artificial organs, we will overcome many problems.”
